I'm thrilled to share our research paper, "Applying Deep Learning to Predict Adverse Environmental Conditions in Fish Aquaculture Pens," which was recently presented at the OCEANS 2024 conference. This was a collaborative effort between Dalhousie University and Innovasea, where we explored how AI can drive efficiency and sustainability in aquaculture. Our work focuses on predicting dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in fish pens, a critical factor for fish health and farm productivity. By working with large datasets collected from aquaculture sites in Canada and Scotland and applying advanced AI techniques, we developed accurate 24-hour forecasts that provide operators with valuable insights for making informed decisions on feeding schedules, aeration, and other critical operations. The study scales from single-pen predictions to broader, multi-region applications. It’s inspiring to see how data driven solutions can empower real time decision making and promote more sustainable practices across the industry. This work would not have been possible without the incredible support and collaboration of my co-authors Jennie Korus, Tyler Sclodnick, and Christopher Whidden. I am also deeply grateful to DeepSense for their invaluable resources and support. If you share an interest in exploring how AI can be applied to make a positive impact on the world, I’d love to connect. You can read the paper here:
