As we head into the new year, we’ve been reflecting on the major achievements that our team's hard work, passion, and innovation made possible. Throughout the week we will share just a few highlights, but we encourage you to see the full #YearInReview on www.cnl.ca/2024-wrapped/ 2024 Highlight - CNL received a renewed licence for the Whiteshell Laboratories Restoration Project (WLRP) from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) for a three-year period, allowing CNL to continue decommissioning and environmental remediation activities at the site.

In honor of another great year of accomplishments at CNL, we wanted to highlight Chalk River’s decommissioning and remediation team, who accomplished a milestone decommissioning effort. The team has safely removed all waste from the historic “Bowser Room,” a formerly high-radiation area once used for reactor water filtration, in one of our legacy fuel storage facilities. Through innovative strategies, including remote-controlled BROKK robots and sea container extensions, we minimized radiation exposure to staff while removing just under 10,300 kilograms of waste. This groundbreaking project prioritized safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. Further remediation is planned to reduce any remaining contamination. Check out the “Bowser Room” in its working state circa 1950 and its final cleaned-out state just this year. Incredible work to all involved! #CNL #Decommissioning

Throughout the week we will share just a few highlights, but we encourage you to see the full #YearInReview on www.cnl.ca/2024-wrapped/ 2024 Highlight - CNL signed an agreement with Natural Resources Canada to provide research to support small modular reactor (SMR) technology as a clean energy option to replace fossil-fuels. Specifically, this work is undertaking cutting edge research into SMR waste streams. Work under this agreement will help build in-house capabilities while supporting both industry and Canada’s broader goals for decarbonisation and economic development.
