Spending 6 years as a Councilor with the Professional Engineers Ontario left quite an impact on me. I was basically a bencher at the age of 36. As a relatively young, black woman who was not even an engineer, I was worried I wouldn't fit in. I was one of three woman when I joined and one of a handful of racialized Councilors. What I love about this photo is that it nicely depict the progressive change that I watched happen right before my eyes. I beleive this was the most diversity PEO has seen, with more than 30% woman and 30% Racialized Councilors on the regulatory board. I miss these guys, so it was great seeing many of my friends and former Councilors last week when I presented at the PEO Volunteer Symposium on Blink Equity initiatives and why Diversity Equity and Inclusion are regulatory issues.

Black History Month is quickly approaching. Has your organization finalized employee engagement and community engagement black history plans yet? Our purpose at Blink Equity is to equip, to empower, and to engage people so that they can become catalysts for change. To this end, we’ve worked on a first-of-its-kind report in Ontario over the last 2 years that collects data on the representation of racialized lawyers within private sector law firms in Ontario that have 50 or more lawyers. This initiative is called the “The Blink Score: A Racial Diversity Audit & Ranking of Ontario Law Firms." How can you be a better ally to colleagues in the muslim community? On February 27th, 2024 Blink Equity partnered with Intuit Canada to celebrate Black History Month and usher in Women's History Month(US) and #IWD2024(Canada). The event, titled the Shades of Success: An SOS for the intersectional women in tech & beyond, was indeed a success. We had the opportunity to delve into the legal origins and definitions of "Intersectionality" as coined by Kimberlé Krenshaw to describe how race, class, gender, and other individual characteristics “intersect” with one another and overlap. Coined nearly 30 years ago, the term was originally created to highlight the unique experiences of Black Women in the workplace and has broadened to include the experiences of women of colour, immigrant women, and women of different religious backgrounds among other groups. As we join colleagues who are observing Ramadan, we encourage you to pause and reflect on how you can be a better ally to members of the muslim community.
