Working to end violence against women and children through direct services + increasing community awareness.
About us
Our mission at Atira Women's Resource Society is twofold: to provide direct services to women and children fleeing violence, and to raise awareness of all forms of gendered violence through education and advocacy. Since 1983, Atira has offered safe and supportive housing to women and children impacted by violence, as well as a range of services in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, Burnaby, Surrey, White Rock, and Richmond. These services include: long-term and transitional housing, shelter programs, housing outreach and homelessness prevention programs, outreach to senior women and First Nations, Metis and Inuit women affected by violence, support for parents and children who witness abuse, legal support, Stopping the Violence counseling, the 16-step program, and self-employment initiatives. Our programs are accessible to anyone who identifies and lives full time as a woman and who experiences gendered violence and misogyny, including trans, two spirit and intersex women and or those who identify with a femme of centre non-binary gender. Critical to the development of our programs and services, Atira's work is informed by the understanding that women's experience of violence often intersects with poverty, racism, substance use, and lack of support for mothering. We also recognize that in addition to providing safety and respect, all of our programs must invite and encourage women’s collaboration and that women must have the opportunity to be active participants in all of our services. Every woman and child has the right to live without abuse. To learn more about Atira's philosophy, mission, and work in the Metro Vancouver Area, please visit www.atira.bc.ca

This holiday season, Atira is encouraging everyone to support local businesses in a meaningful way. By shopping locally, consumers not only find unique and thoughtful gifts but also contribute to the growth of small businesses and the local economy. Through its social enterprise, East Van Roasters (EVR), Atira provides career training for women and femme-identifying individuals facing barriers to employment in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Each purchase from EVR – whether it's freshly roasted coffee or bean-to-bar chocolate – plays a crucial role in empowering individuals and supporting the community. By choosing to shop local, customers are helping to create lasting change and strengthen the bonds within the local economy. Atira invites everyone to make a difference this holiday season by supporting local businesses that foster growth and empowerment. Visit EVR to shop for gifts that give back, and help create a brighter, more inclusive future. #TisTheSeasonToSupport #SupportLocal #HolidayGiving #ShopLocal #EmpowerWomen #BreakBarriers #EastVanRoasters #SupportSmallBusiness #CommunityStrength #GiftsThatGiveBack

Tis the Season to Create! This holiday season, we invite you to slow down, get creative, and embrace the healing power of art. Crafting not only brings joy and connection, but it also fosters a sense of accomplishment and mindfulness. At Atira, we believe in the transformative power of creativity, which is why our social enterprise, Enterprising Women Making Art (EWMA), provides a safe, inclusive space for women and femme-identifying artists to nurture their talents. Through EWMA, these individuals are empowered to express themselves while contributing to a vibrant community of creators. As you explore the holiday season and its crafts, we encourage you to try your hand at making Snowflake Ornaments and Pinecone Gnomes. These easy-to-follow, hands-on projects are a perfect way to add a personal touch to your holiday decor. Moreover, this season is also about giving back. Support our efforts and the artisans in EWMA by visiting our store for unique, handcrafted gifts, or consider making a monetary donation. Your contribution can help provide safe housing, support mental health, and create opportunities for women and families in need. Let’s create together! #HolidayCreativity #EWMA #WomenInArt #CraftingJoy #HandmadeGifts #SnowflakeOrnaments #PineconeGnomes #HolidayCheer #ArtForHealing #InclusiveArt #SupportWomenArtists #AtirasHolidayDrive #MakeADifference #SpreadJoy #CreativeCommunity

At Atira’s main office, we marked the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence by creating a dedicated space for reflection, connection, and dialogue. 💜 This initiative provided an opportunity for our team to share their insights and stories of resilience by answering the question: “What does empowerment mean to you?” The responses, displayed on a collaborative board, symbolize the strength, wisdom, and commitment that guide our work every day. Each message serves as a profound reminder of our shared responsibility to end gender-based violence and build a future grounded in justice, safety, and equity for all. As we continue this journey together, we remain steadfast in amplifying voices, fostering learning, and creating meaningful change. @ywcavan #16DaysOfActivism #Atira #Empowerment #EndViolence #TogetherForChange #GenderEquality #SpeakUp #NoMoreSilence #BreakTheSilence #Resilience #JusticeForAll #CollectiveStrength #ListenLearnAct #StandUnited #SafeSpaces

On December 6, we reflect on the tragic loss of 14 young women in 1989 and the ongoing impact of gender-based violence in our communities. This day reminds us of the strength, courage, and resilience of those who continue to face discrimination and violence. Sadly, gender-based violence remains pervasive in many forms—some visible, others hidden. At Atira, we are committed to ending gender-based violence and building safe, inclusive spaces where all individuals who identify as women can thrive. This mission is at the heart of our daily work, but we cannot do it alone. Join us in supporting those impacted by violence. Your donation helps us continue creating safe spaces and advocating for change: https://lnkd.in/gDjsybWM #EndViolence #RememberDecember6 #EndGenderBasedViolence #GenderEquality #StopTheViolence #EmpowerWomen #SpeakOutAgainstViolence #ViolencePreventionPrograms #WomenSafetyServices #SafeHousingForAll #ViolenceAgainstWomenOrganizations #NonprofitVancouver #NoMoreViolence
