Violence against sex workers takes many forms. Crimes are underreported and unpunished, perpetuated by discrimination and stigma. Today—the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers—demonstrations and vigils held around the world indicate the extreme scale of these crimes, and demand attention. Including sex workers' needs, voices and expertise is essential to improve community safety. #RightsNotRescue #SupportSexWorkers #DecrimNow #IDEVASW #Dec17

38 years of supporting women engaged in street-based sex work
About us
For almost 40 years, WISH has been a refuge and an essential point of contact for street-based sex workers who have been made vulnerable due to poverty, homelessness, trauma, violence, stigma, and a lack of access to supports and opportunities. WISH is the largest organization in Canada supporting sex workers and the only drop-in centre and shelter in the region supporting them 365 nights a year. Our mission is to improve the health, safety and well-being of women and gender diverse people who are involved in Vancouver’s street-based sex trade. Our vision is for every woman to have access to opportunities to make free, healthy and positive choices.

Women and gender-diverse individuals face unacceptable levels of violence. The acts of violent misogyny that occurred 35 years ago at Polytechnique Montréal are echoed in the epidemic of gender-based violence happening today. Sex work laws in this country amplify the risk for workers, which makes community-based support so important. The Red Light Alert is a weekly report containing information for sex workers by sex workers and lists warnings about high-risk offenders. Learn more about this safety tool—and how to receive the alert—on the WISH website: https://lnkd.in/dishNuEc #16Days #EndGBV #WhiteRibbon

Everyone deserves the opportunity to make free, healthy and positive choices — but the people that WISH Drop-In Centre Society exists to serve are often denied that fundamental right. Learn more in this article from The Tyee Presents: https://lnkd.in/grVxc_zw

Two days left until WISH’s 40th Anniversary Fundraiser! https://bit.ly/4dEgCGz Thanks to incredible community support, In Solidarity will be a gala like no other. You’ll hear from WISH participants and program managers, as well as guest presenters Steph Sia and Jen St. Denis, about the ways stigma and systems of oppression create barriers and continue to cause harm. We’ll celebrate the resilience, intelligence, and strength of WISH participants with performances from bellydancer Kadisha, musician Tonye Aganaba, drag superstar Kara Juku and DJ Kasey Riot. Enjoy incredible food (from Chewies!), drinks, bid on items in the silent auction, check out some limited edition WISH swag, and you can even get a custom WISH-inspired tattoo while you’re there (thanks to Neighbourhood Nick)! Stand in solidarity with street-based sex workers and help raise critical funds for the WISH Drop-In, Shelter and MAP Van. If you are free on Thursday, please join us at The Thirds in Railtown! And if you can’t make it this time, you can still enjoy the online auction ;) #InSolidarity #40YearsOfWISH #SexWorkersRights #YouMakeWISHHappen #NonProfit #DTES
