This is an incredible milestone for housing justice in South Berkeley! The purchase of this property as permanently affordable, community-controlled housing was made possible in part through a PBF loan, empowering resident advocacy and strategic partnerships to prevent displacement. PBF is proud to support transformative efforts like these that center community leadership and fight for equitable housing solutions in the Bay Area.

We're thrilled to announce the launch of the third cohort of the Policy Fund, awarding $7 million to 10 local governments and their community-based organization partners. This new round of funding builds on the success of previous cohorts, driving equity-centered policies to protect renters, promote community stability, and expand access to affordable housing. This cohort will focus on ambitious and innovative themes like tenant protections, the intersectionality of housing justice with environmental justice and public health, and unlocking alternative funding sources. By equipping grantees with the tools to address political challenges and foster inclusive collaboration, we're laying the groundwork for bold and equitable housing solutions with the power to inspire change regionally and beyond.

Thanks to the amazing work of the PBF Policy Fund team of the City of San José and SOMOS Mayfair, the city passed the Tenant Preferences Program! Critical in the fight against displacement, this policy enables low-income households and residents from neighborhoods where there have high rates of displacement to have priority access to new affordable housing. Robust community outreach through workshops and advocacy campaigns were crucial to ensuring the policy meets the needs of those most impacted by displacement. TOPA empowers renters by giving them the chance to buy their homes when they go on the market, ensuring that residents remain stably housed. It also keeps control of our local housing within our community­ instead of with wealthy speculators.
