About us
The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative was founded in 2015 to help solve some of society’s toughest challenges — from eradicating disease and improving education, to addressing the needs of our communities. Through collaboration, providing resources and building technology, our mission is to help build a more inclusive, just and healthy future for everyone. We engage directly in the communities we serve because no one understands how to address our society’s challenges better than those who live them everyday. These partners help us identify problems and opportunities, learn fast and iterate toward our audacious goals for the next century. We strive to be humble, empathetic and life-long learners who work collaboratively to develop community-centered solutions. To help build a more just, equitable future, we embrace people from all backgrounds and experiences, who challenge each other’s assumptions with fresh perspectives. To that end, we are co-creating an environment where everyone feels respected, valued and we celebrate the beauty in the diversity of our shared strength. Supporting small businesses means investing in dreams, livelihoods and the vibrant diversity that makes our communities unique. 💫 The Holiday Night Market, hosted by grantee partner Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center in our Community Space, brought together local entrepreneurs to showcase their handcrafted goods. More than 200 community members browsed, shopped and connected over festive food and drinks. From ChulaSF’s artisanal accessories and Wick2Whispers’ cozy candles to Unfazed’s bold streetwear and Humble Bites’ vegan, gluten-free snacks, there was truly something special for everyone. The evening was a joyful celebration of creativity, connection and the power of community. 💛 #BayArea #community #SmallBusiness #Holiday

It’s an incredible time in biomedicine. Advances in AI + tons of data on individual cells mean we’re on the brink of new scientific breakthroughs that can help us find and treat diseases earlier. Learn more: https://czi.co/4g1jTSa #science #AIML #biology #MachineLearning #SingleCell #CompBio
We’re entering an exciting new chapter in scientific discovery. In collaboration with the scientific community, CZI released our first AI-powered cell models designed to help: 🔍 Simplify complex tasks like protein mapping and characterizing cell types for biologists 🧠 Enable machine learning researchers to more easily train and validate models 🔬Open up new ways to understand diseases, starting with imaging and single-cell research This is just the start. By providing easy access to cell models, we’re not only offering new resources to better understand our cells, but also inviting biologists and machine learning experts to develop and improve these tools together. Through collaboration, we’re helping advance AI tools to empower scientists and transform the way we understand and cure diseases.

What if we could prevent diseases by tracking inflammation in real time? CZ Biohub Chicago’s new biosensors do just that. These small devices, currently being explored in research, monitor inflammation markers continuously, providing insights that could one day save lives and reduce healthcare costs. “Much like continuous glucose monitors changed diabetes care decades ago, these sensors could revolutionize how we understand and manage inflammation.” - Shana Kelley, Chicago Biohub President whose team developed the sensors. This technology has the potential to impact many inflammation-related diseases, from acute illnesses to chronic conditions—paving the way for a new era of prevention-focused healthcare. #CZBiohubCHI #science #bioengineering #tech

Open source tools are critical for biomedical research! Open source tools are critical for biomedical research! Are you shouting that? Please do. The team at Saeyslab understands that the development of open source software, like NicheNet and dynverse, is crucial to advancing scientific breakthroughs. Their interdisciplinary research team consists of computer scientists, bioinformaticians and clinicians working to translate computational models to the clinic to maximize impact for society. “We are developing trustworthy computational models of cells and tissues. Our aim is to understand how cells interact with each other to implement tissue functionality, and how these interactions change in disease settings compared to the healthy state.” When teams have the tools they need and science is open, research is more transparent and easier to reproduce. #OpenScience #OpenSource #DataScience #SciTech #Research

Stories are a powerful tool to change hearts and minds and energize people to take action. Grantees All Home and the Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern California (NPH) recently debuted 'Stories of Home' in our Community Space, showcasing powerful short films from the Housing Justice Storytelling Initiative. The Initiative brought together seven housing justice organizations, a storyteller from their communities and a local team of filmmakers to highlight some of the solutions at work in the #BayArea. #community #AffordableHousing #housing #HousingSecurity
