An international development organisation putting ingenious ideas to work so people in poverty can change their world.
About us
Our Vision is a world that works better for everyone. Practical Action is an international development organisation putting ingenious ideas to work so people in poverty can change their world. We help people find solutions to some of the world’s toughest problems. Challenges made worse by catastrophic climate change and persistent gender inequality. We work with communities to develop ingenious, lasting, and locally owned solutions for agriculture, water and waste management, climate resilience and clean energy. And we share what works with others, so answers that start small can grow big. We’re a global change-making group. The group consists of a UK registered charity with community projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America, an independent development publishing company and a technical consulting service. We combine these specialisms to multiply our impact and help shape a world that works better for everyone. We believe in the power of small things to change the big picture. And that together we can take practical action to build futures free from poverty. In Nepal, Practical Action is focused on putting ingenious ideas to work to contribute to poverty reduction and sustainable wellbeing for all through our works on three thematic areas: Energy that transforms, Resilience that protects, and Farming that works.

The Third National Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction(NCDRR) under the leadership of NDRRMA, in collaboration with NPDRR and Disaster Preparedness Network- Nepal (DPNet-Nepal) was held on December 26-27, 2024 under the theme: "Monsoon 2024 and Beyond: Turning Lessons into Resilient Strategies." The conference brought together experts, policymakers and practitioners to share good practices in DRR and focused on how to increase the response capacity of the DRR institutions, communities and stakeholders. Regenerative Agriculture: Cultivating Sustainable Farms and Thriving Lives 🎇 On December 27, 2024, Practical Action in Nepal successfully hosted “National Workshop on Regenerative Agriculture Practices”. The workshop was honoured by the presence of Dr. Ram Krishna Shrestha, Joint Secretary of Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development as the Chief Guest, and attended by high-level government officials, representatives from different development organisations and distinguished guests. The workshop served as a significant platform to share Practical Action’s learnings through “SAMUNNATI: Building climate adaptive farming opportunities and improved livelihoods for women and marginalised groups in Nepal” Project. The event comprised two panel discussions, an experience-sharing session and photos/videos on display. The panel discussion titled “Regenerative Agriculture: Need, Basis and Opportunity” featured ↪️ Balram Rijal, Senior soil expert, MOALD ↪️ Dr. Shree Pd. Bista, Senior soil scientist, NARC ↪️ Sarita Chaudhary, Lead farmer and local resource person from Dang In this panel discussion, panellists emphasised the crucial role of #soil health in enhancing productivity and food safety. However, they noted that research on #regenerative practices is still insufficient and requires further development. Recommendations included improving access to resources, increasing technical training, developing digital tools for farmers, and focusing on community-based initiatives to restore degraded soils. Similarly in the experience-sharing session, the following key figures from the fields shared how Practical Action worked with them in collaboration: ↪️Bibas Roka Magar, Farmer from Bhume, Rolpa ↪️Chandra Prakash Mahara, Chairperson of Market Management Committee, Holeri, Rolpa ↪️Sarita KC, Vice-chairperson of Runtigadhi Rural Municipality, Rolpa ↪️Karna Bahadur Batha Magar, Chairperson of Tribeni Rural Municipality, Rolpa The second panel discussion featured journalists and our Media Fellows 2024: ↪️Krishna Gyawali, OnlineKhabar ↪️Indira Aryal, The Rising Nepal ↪️Numa Thamsuhang, Kantipur Daily The panel was moderated by Deepak Adhikari, senior journalist and mentor for our Media Fellowship. In this panel discussion, panellists reflected on the process and challenges while covering news focused on #agriculture. It was noted that farmers are often depicted as victims in reports, and there is a general lack of awareness about soil health despite experts pointing out issues including soil acidity and low organic matter. The keynote speech by Dr Ram Krishna Shrestha focused on scaling up the production of local resource persons on a sustainable basis and the commercialisation of alternative input solutions while maintaining their standard. We are grateful for the presence of all the audience members who took part in the discussions and shared their input 🌟 Dev Datta Bhatta Deependra Bhujel Dipendra Sharma Indira Aryal

💡 A study in 2022 found that the growing feminisation of agriculture in Nepal was driven by male out-migration. But this comes at a cost 👩🌾 As a large number of women engage in agriculture for their livelihood, they face heightened vulnerability to unsafe chemical use. It is critical to prioritise women farmers' safety and health by promoting mass awareness, implementing supportive policies, and adopting safe food production as a national agriculture standard 🌽 Read more about vulnerabilities that Nepali women farmers face in this insightful article by our 2024 Media Fellow Indira Aryal ⬇️ Link: https://lnkd.in/gAzUiKp6 #feminisation #agriculture #women #farmers Menila Kharel Dev Datta Bhatta Santosh Adhikari Deepak Adhikari
