We just celebrated 32 undergraduate students who earned their carbon literacy certificate! 💫 Congratulations to everyone! All the students are studying at University College Dublin in Ireland and took the Big Zero co-curricular programme on climate action. The feedback from students about Big Zero was amazing - 💚 It gave them a sense of agency to make positive change. 💚 It was empowering and positive. 💚 Our actions have positive ripple effects and our voices advocating change matter. 💚 They feel connected with peers and empathy for people experiencing different kinds of climate impacts around the world. They are international students from more than 20 different countries around the world. They shared how climate action is taking shape in their home countries and experienced how their new home of Ireland is taking positive action too. The showstopper in the Big Zero programme is the field trip! Everyone had an inspiring experience at Hometree, Common Knowledge and Airfield Estate, connecting them to the natural beauty of Ireland in a unique way. Kudos to the UCD Global team for organising today's event to celebrate the journey and everyone's achievements. If you're inspired to know more - Big Zero is an accredited carbon literacy training programme for undergraduate college students specially designed to encourage a positive 'can do' mindset. Two global green lab certification programmes exist. Both of them are tried and tested and ready for you to use in your own lab setting. But which is best for your lab? My Green Lab and LEAF (Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework) both: ✅ Provide a framework for action ✅ Allow you choose what is relevant for your setting ✅ Include a verification process ✅ Allow you to track progress and estimate Kwh and carbon savings ✅ Award labs with tiered certificates Which type of institutions are they designed for? 📌 The LEAF programme is open for academic institutions to join. 📌 My Green Lab is open for academic, government, and private sector labs to join. 📌 Both programmes have their roots in wet labs and offer excellent guidance on saving energy, water, reducing waste as well as some guidance related to greener travel and computing. What are the fees to join? 💷 One academic institution can join LEAF for one year, the cost is 1,100 - 2,600 GBP and any number of labs, departments, divisions can participate. 💵 My Green Lab pricing is calculated per lab. For one lab the price is 500 USD, 2 labs costs 900 USD and so on. 🔊 An excellent new paper by Bianca Schell and Nico Bruns out in Sustainability #RSCSustainability compares the two programmes in practice in labs across Germany. They find that: 💡 Both programmes are primarily designed for biology, life science and chemistry labs but they are being used in engineering, material sciences, and clinical labs. 💡Both programmes encourage more sustainable work in labs, but neither has an “external validation of the certifications, such as an external audit" 💡Although LEAF was designed in the UK and Ireland, users can "enter local guidance to criteria, making it adaptable to national or local frameworks. " 💡My Green Lab requires that at least 50% of your lab participate in the evaluation. This is great for engagement and culture change. This brilliant paper can help you decide which one is best suited to your institution. Link to the full text here https://lnkd.in/gx3E55QQ

🤔Can research institutions develop solutions to climate change as well as reduce their own carbon footprint? 🙄🥼⚗️Can we reduce emissions from our own sector? 💡 It was wonderful to hear back from Dr Krish Saha, Associate Professor in Circular Economy, who participated in the Zeroverse Carbon Literacy training and said that he "left the course inspired to make even greater personal and professional changes". “With my background in sustainability and the circular economy, I expected to expand on what I already knew, but Kate's Carbon Literacy training offered much more. She guided me to think beyond my current practices and challenged me to adopt new, actionable strategies to reduce my carbon footprint. Kate's persuasive approach and in-depth knowledge provided fresh perspectives that have motivated me to further integrate sustainability into my teaching and research. The most impressive element of the training was her ability to connect with participants at different levels of understanding. I left the course inspired to make even greater personal and professional changes.” 🙏 Thank you Krish for your generous testimonial and best of luck with your ambitious plans for action! 👉 If you'd like to see more climate action in your own organisation, feel free to get in touch about group training or check out future training dates here https://lnkd.in/g-YDQbYg Zeroverse training is accredited by The Carbon Literacy Project. #CarbonLiteracy #ClimateAction

🙌 In today’s #BigZero training session: good climate news! The students in the #BigZeroUCD group are from 20 countries around the world. In today’s session each international student shared a good news climate story from their home country. ❓ Guess what… We are taking steps in the right direction! ✔ China is financing EV charging infrastructure in remote areas ✔ In Italy, greener building materials get tax breaks ✔ Communities are mobilising in India to collect trash ✔ Germany is closing coal-fired power stations ✔ South Africa revoked Shell’s oil and gas exploration license ✔ Public transport is subsided in Germany and Austria ✔ In the USA, food waste is being turned into fuels At this stage in the BigZero training, we have examined the causes of climate change and shared our own experiences of its impacts. It’s hard to face these realities. The challenge for each of us is to poses this knowledge and take active steps forward towards something better. 💡 Today’s session was all about inspiring each other so that we can move in the right direction. Thanks to Caroline Mangan for spearheading #BigZeroUCD, to Katherine Mulfaul, Catherine Convery, Enda Carroll and UCD Global for this positive collaboration! ➡ Check out https://www.big-zero.org/ if you’d like to offer this accredited #CarbonLiteracy and #climateaction training programme to your students.
