Industry analyst Jim Glade attended R&D Forum 2024 in Tokyo where NTT revealed applications for its Active Noise Control (ANC) technology. NTT’s Personalized Sound Zone (PSZ) technology is the ultimate private sound space through which open-ear headphones reduce select ambient noise while simultaneously selecting desired outside sounds to amplify to the listener. Applications include headrest headphones in cars which can help cancel out unwanted noises while amplifying important sounds that can help drivers be safer. During his presentation at R&D Forum 2024, Shingo Kinoshita, senior vice president and head of research and development planning at NTT shared NTT's approach to research and development, “Do research by drawing from the fountain of knowledge and provide specific benefits to society through commercial development.’ Goro Yoshida, the first director of the Electrical Communication Laboratory, spoke these words in 1950. After more than 70 years, those words still live on as the DNA of NTT Laboratories. Central to NTT's Industry AI Cloud is the Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (#IOWN), a next-generation communications infrastructure. Kitty Wheeler from Technology Magazine highlighted one such example of the Industry AI Cloud from the NTT R&D Forum 2024: NTT demonstrated the first international connection of its IOWN All-Photonics Network (APN). The demonstration, conducted in collaboration with Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan's largest telecommunications company, showcased a virtual reality proof-of-concept connecting Taipei and Tokyo and featured an ultra-low-latency interactive immersive video show, allowing users in both Taiwan and Japan to join a virtual space to watch virtual reality (VR) performances and interact with each other. NTT and Tokyo Broadcasting System Television, Inc. (TBS) are leveraging the NTT IOWN APN with high-capacity and low-latency to connect remote production and filming sites. This new approach overcomes key challenges with conventional video production technology, including: the impossibility of simultaneously transmitting multiple camera images in a large capacity from a filming location to a remote production base; large delays in camera control signals and headset audio information disrupting communication between a crew and remote producer; and the difficulty of maintaining a stable communication environment. Using multicore fibre cables and massive MIMO signal processing, NTT has achieved stable signal transmission at rates of up to 455 Tbit/s in a field test with hardsh simulated environmental effects. In his article following the announcement, Nick Flaherty from EE News Europe shaed that while in traditional optical network architecture, data flows down a single core, multiple cores can transmit signals in parallel, increasing the number of channels and capacity. This technology is expected to be a fundamental technology for realizing future terrestrial optical transmission systems with transmission capacity more than 50 times that of conventional systems.
