Central to NTT's Industry AI Cloud is the Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (#IOWN), a next-generation communications infrastructure. Kitty Wheeler from Technology Magazine highlighted one such example of the Industry AI Cloud from the NTT R&D Forum 2024: NTT demonstrated the first international connection of its IOWN All-Photonics Network (APN). The demonstration, conducted in collaboration with Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan's largest telecommunications company, showcased a virtual reality proof-of-concept connecting Taipei and Tokyo and featured an ultra-low-latency interactive immersive video show, allowing users in both Taiwan and Japan to join a virtual space to watch virtual reality (VR) performances and interact with each other. NTT and Tokyo Broadcasting System Television, Inc. (TBS) are leveraging the NTT IOWN APN with high-capacity and low-latency to connect remote production and filming sites. This new approach overcomes key challenges with conventional video production technology, including: the impossibility of simultaneously transmitting multiple camera images in a large capacity from a filming location to a remote production base; large delays in camera control signals and headset audio information disrupting communication between a crew and remote producer; and the difficulty of maintaining a stable communication environment. At the International AI Policy: Outlook for 2025 at Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Abhijit Dubey, CEO of NTT DATA, Inc., shared transformative insights on AI’s immense potential and the urgent need for responsible innovation. From addressing sustainability challenges to ethical AI governance, learn how NTT is shaping a secure and sustainable AI future.

Using multicore fibre cables and massive MIMO signal processing, NTT has achieved stable signal transmission at rates of up to 455 Tbit/s in a field test with hardsh simulated environmental effects. In his article following the announcement, Nick Flaherty from EE News Europe shaed that while in traditional optical network architecture, data flows down a single core, multiple cores can transmit signals in parallel, increasing the number of channels and capacity. This technology is expected to be a fundamental technology for realizing future terrestrial optical transmission systems with transmission capacity more than 50 times that of conventional systems. These included five world's first R&D breakthroughs in photonic networking, remote video production, optical fiber innovation and Personalized Sound Zone open-ear headphones. The theme of this year’s forum centered around IOWN INTEGRAL, reflecting NTT’s dedication implementing IOWN across a wide range of applications. Notably, NTT President and CEO Akira Shimada discussed the company’s development of the Industry AI Cloud to advance industry-specific AI applications empowered by the IOWN. David Costa, Chief Sustainability Business Officer, NTT DATA, shared insights with Amber Jackson from Data Centre Magazine for her latest article on the role of sustainability strategy for optimizing data center supply chains. David noted that NTT's recent report, titled “Exploring the Paths to Net Zero,” uncovered that larger companies are falling short of their net-zero carbon emissions targets across industries. The article also spotlighted NTT DATA's greenhouse gas emissions visualisation platform C-Turtle, with the aim of reducing emissions.
