♻️ It has been an exciting year for #DepositReturnSchemes (DRSs) for drink container recycling! 🗓️ 2024 alone has seen the launch of two brand new DRSs in Hungary and Ireland. It also saw expansions and modernizations of five existing DRSs, in California, Germany, Connecticut, Austria and Greenland – to cover more types of containers, more types of drinks, or raise the deposit/refund value. DRSs are a proven method to increase recycling rates, combat litter, drive a circular economy, and increase access to quality recycled content. 🚮 Giving an empty drink container a financial value also communicates its value to society as a resource, to be used again and again to make new drink containers. ♾️ Happy recycling to first-time and returning recyclers in all of 2024’s new and updated deposit return schemes! #Recycling #DRS

Get in the loop! It's the more rewarding way to recycle. TOMRA Collection provides reverse vending machines for Clean Loop Recycling, to transform society’s habits and keep valuable resources in a continuous loop of use and reuse. This month has been filled with Christmas spirit at TOMRA’s headquarters in Asker. We’ve had a lot of jolly fun, including our Ugly Christmas Sweater Day! 🎅✨ This week, we also held our our cherished tradition of a Christmas celebration. It was a heartwarming event where we honored employees who have truly embodied our values and recognized those who have been with us for 5, 10, and even up to 40 years! A special highlight was the presence of our founders, the Planke brothers. Tore Planke delivered a touching speech to Geir Hanevold our manager director for TOMRA production, who is retiring after an incredible 41 years with TOMRA. This event was filled with joy and carols, creating a perfect end to the year. 🎶🎁 #CompanyTradition #WeAreTOMRA

Are you in the Loop? ♻ Clean Loop Recycling is when used drink containers, like bottles and cans, are continually recycled back into new bottles and cans so we don’t have to extract fresh resources for the job. The materials these containers are made from can only be used for the same purpose in their next life if they keep their “food-grade” status intact. That's what puts the “Clean” in Clean Loop Recycling. ✨ Reverse vending machines enable Clean Loop Recycling by collecting drink containers separately from other types of waste, helping them to avoid contamination, loss of their “food-grade” status, and having to be downcycled into lower value stuff. Keeping them separated in this way means they can become new containers again and again and again. #CircularEconomy On top of helping avoid litter ending up in our streets, rivers, oceans, and forests, when drinks containers are kept in the Clean Loop, it avoids the carbon emissions associated with sending them to landfills and incinerators, as well as with the production of new containers using fresh resources. #Anniversary 🇷🇴 It is now one year since the launch of Romania’s #DepositReturnScheme (DRS) for drink container recycling! ♻️ https://lnkd.in/dNxCCgfe Since 30 November 2023, more than 3 billion containers have been returned. 🏆 In October, system operator RetuRO SGR found the DRS saw 84% of eligible containers collected for recycling, up from 80% in September and 78% in August. These results show the enthusiastic support of consumers, and the efficiency of the DRS. “In just one year, the deposit return scheme has shown that Romania can be a successful model in responsible packaging management. The active participation of consumers, the involvement of retailers and the adoption of innovative solutions have turned this project into a success story for the environment and the community," said Dorin Mihai, General Manager, TOMRA Collection Romania. #Romania #Recycling

♻️ Spain is moving closer to implementing a #DepositReturnScheme (DRS). Last week, the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition published a report revealing that the current collection rate for single-use PET bottles stands at 41.3%. This is below the targets mandated by the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD), which require a 77% collection rate by 2025 and 90% by 2029. To address this gap, Spain has announced plans to implement a DRS for PET bottles, cans and beverage cartons within the next two years, aiming to significantly improve collection and recycling rates for these materials. 🌍 Why it matters: The introduction of a DRS is a significant step towards reducing waste, improving collection and recycling rates, and fostering a circular economy. It highlights Spain’s growing commitment to meeting EU environmental goals. Report: https://lnkd.in/d8gkX-RE #SpainRecycles #DepositReturnSystem #CircularEconomy #SingleUsePlasticsDirective
