🌎There is a vast difference in the US risk landscape, with natural disasters like floods, wildfires, and storms becoming more frequent and severe. Homeowners in vulnerable areas are grappling with rising insurance costs and regions most at risk are seeing dramatic increases in premiums. 💡For many, it’s not just about the weather—it’s about affordability. The financial impacts of climate change are no longer distant concerns; they’re hitting home, both literally and figuratively. 🚀 We need localized risk assessments and targeted solutions to help communities adapt before costs rise even higher. #7Analytics #RiskManagementSolutions #FloodRiskData
“Tight correlation between premium rises and counties deemed most at risk from climate crisis”. This extract is from the very convincing analysis of Ben Keys and Philip Mulder from University of Pennsylvania and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, respectively, presented in The Guardian. More in detail, I find it captivating that the counties at most risk have seen a 23% increase in insurance rates over the last three years. Insurers are pricing in the risk of flood, wildfire, and storms which is a step towards a more resilient society. On average, exposed homeowners have seen a $500 spike in annual premiums. However, this data is presented on zip and county level to tell a national-wide story. But: The largest county in the US (Alaska excluded) is 20k sq miles which is larger than many sovereign countries. Even when zooming in on zip codes climate risk can differ immensely from one side of an urban area to another, from one neighborhood to the next, and from one side of a street to the other. This research shows that we need to go about this with as detailed risk information as possible. This way insurance premiums can signal real risk, governments may direct support, and people and business can take meaningful action to combat hyper-local risks of floods, fires, and high winds.

🌍💧It was a pleasure speaking about 7Analytics’ flood prediction tools at the Twin summits: The 9th India Water Impact Summit and 2nd Climate Investments and Technology Impact Summit. I took home a multitude of insights about the Indian flood landscape. As coincidence would have it, I directly experienced the effects of the increasingly severe cyclone season with cyclone Fengal hitting Chennai and Pondicherry just last week, claiming lives and causing severe damages across the state of Tamil Nadu. In some areas, Fengal triggered more than 50cm (!) of rainfall in 24 hours. 50 cm would imply 5 meters of snow ❄️. That would never happen anywhere on earth, but that is how it visualise it. Both urbanisation and more frequent intense rainfall make urban flooding one of the fastest growing physical climate risks. Our talk focused on the different components needed to build an ecosystem that empowers data-driven measures to build resilience in a changing climate: ✅ High-resolution data to pinpoint risks with precision, ✅ Investors committed to advancing water sector technologies, and ✅ Government support to create the right incentives for businesses to adopt resilience measures. Thanks for everyone’s questions and contributions. I look forward to visiting India soon again! We’re thrilled to be featured in the latest #Adaptation10 release by Climate Proof, alongside innovators like Aggéres, Hydro International, AquaFence and others working to build resilience against climate change impacts. 🌍 Flooding remains one of the most pressing physical climate risks, and we are committed to leveraging cutting-edge flood forecasting and risk management solutions to empower communities and businesses. 🌊 What are your thoughts on integrating tech into climate adaptation strategies? And what is needed at the global versus local level to limit human and material losses? Last month, we had the opportunity to join the conversation at The Shift - 1st Corporate Climate Adaptation Conference (Nov 6th) in Berlin, where we explored how technology can play a pivotal role in building climate resilience. The event was an inspiring hub of ideas, collaboration, and shared urgency to tackle these challenges head-on. Thank you to everyone who contributed their insights! And a big thank you to Climate Proof, Louie Woodall, and DSR & Partners - The Climate Adaptation Advisors for highlighting our work in this report. - Link in comments #ClimateAdaptation #FloodTech #Resilience #Sustainability #Innovation

📰 Our colleague, Dr. Björn Nyberg contributed to a new groundbreaking study published in Nature Scientific Reports, which highlights alarming projections of sea-level rise in the Gulf of Guinea, one of the world's most vulnerable regions to sea level rise. 🌊 Using historical sea surface height data (1993–2015) and detailed topographic analysis, the researchers assessed the region's exposure to rising seas. By the end of the century, as much as 4,331 square kilometers of coastal land could be permanently inundated, displacing up to two million people at risk under high-emission scenarios. 🗨️ Dr. Nyberg, a key researcher on the project and senior geospatial analyst at 7Analytics, states: “rising sea levels combined with changing sea states, a unique coastal morphology and densely populated coastal communities, make it a particularly vulnerable region to coastal flooding. The predicted coastal retreat in the following decades will also lead to further coastal flood damage from extreme sea level events that are expected to increase in frequency and intensity”. 🎯 The study underscores the urgent need for targeted adaptation strategies and robust early warning systems, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

⛈️ While weather forecasting has been enhanced with AI, the adage “forewarned is forearmed” doesn’t always hold true. There are still significant gaps in knowledge on how to effectively use this information and secure necessary investments. 🗞️ In a recent Reuters article, 7Analytics CCO Jonas Aas Torland highlighted the importance of taking high-precision weather forecasts and turn them into accurate flood predictions. He emphasized the need for increased investment in AI solutions and greater preparedness in Europe. Full article here: https://lnkd.in/dejuzQkt
