Last week the Deputy Mayor of Thakurbaba Municipality, Ms Bina Kumari Bhattrai presented at the National WASH Advocacy Summit 2024 on the theme "Making WASH a Political Agenda". During her presentation, she emphasized the importance of an O&M policy and dedicated funds for WASH in healthcare facilities (HCF). She explained that the policy was developed by the Municipality based on evidence, specifically through a life cycle costing exercise, which served as the foundation for allocating the O&M fund. What is particularly inspiring is that the municipality has recently extended the O&M fund provision to schools, inspired by the success of similar provisions in HCF. Terre des hommes foundation and Geruwa provided technical support for the policy's development, leveraging life cycle costing and advocacy to ensure the effective implementation of the policy and its implementation procedures. The amazing Amrit Rijal shares his experience of working with Tdh in Nepal. “Working with Terre des hommes (Tdh) Nepal's ‘Sports for Protection (S4P)’ project was a deeply rewarding experience. Through football, the project empowered children and young people in Rong, Suryodaya and Mechinagar who are at risk of trafficking and unsafe migration. My role involved leading workshops on child rights, abuse, and protection mechanisms, fostering awareness and resilience among participants. Sessions were held Saturday morning which were a blend of learning and connection, as I witnessed young people growing more confident and informed. The highlight was the football tournament in Suryodaya on October 21, 2024, where mixed-gender teams showcased their strength, hope, and unity. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of community-driven initiatives to create meaningful change."

"The implementation of the Operation & Maintenance Fund has proven to be highly effective and efficient," shared Bina Bhattarai, Deputy Mayor of Thakurbaba Municipality. "We established a 500,000 NPR replenishable fund at the municipality level and allocated 20,000 NPR for each Health Care Facility, embedding this approach into the municipality’s WASH policy. This has not only eliminated bureaucratic hurdles but also significantly reduced O&M costs. Building on its success, we replicated this model by introducing a 1.1 million NPR fund for schools." This notable achievement highlights the impact of a project we are implementing with Geurwa under the Swiss Water Sanitation Consortia (SWSC) with funding from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), where the aim of the SWSC consortia is to promote sustainable and scalable solutions across institutions. Last week our team in Nepal had the honor to facilitate the visit by Marc-André Bünzli who is Head of WASH at Swiss Humanitarian Aid and serves as the primary contact for SWSC within SDC. Visits from technical experts such as Marc-Andre are brilliant opportunities for our teams to take feedback and strengthen the work we do on ground. Learning is a continuous journey.
