This milestone in automotive technology came courtesy of General Motors and Eaton. They used resistive touch technology for the first time in the Buick Riviera model. This system allowed drivers to interact with in-car entertainment, navigation, and climate control systems, all with a simple tap! But what is resistive touch technology? It works by sensing pressure on the screen. When you press the surface, it detects the change in electrical resistance and registers the input. This was revolutionary at the time, as it allowed drivers to operate various vehicle systems without the need for physical buttons or knobs. Though the tech has advanced to the more responsive capacitive touchscreens we see today, the roots of automotive touch interfaces trace back to this breakthrough in 1986. The Buick Riviera was the first car to feature this kind of interface, and from there, touchscreens began to grow in popularity across the automotive industry.
