Did you know that two Indian legends, Sudha Murty (chairperson of Infosys) and JRD Tata, crossed paths for the first time in 1974? TELCO (now Tata Motors) posted a job ad at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) looking for brilliant young, bright engineers with a good salary, but in the end, they had mentioned that 𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲. This made Sudha Murty angry. Determined to challenge the prejudice against female engineering students, Sudha decided to write a letter to JRD Tata. In the letter she wrote, "Sir, JRD Tata, when the country was not independent, your group started the chemicals, locomotive, iron, and steel industry. You are always ahead of the times. In this society, there are 50 per cent of men and 50 per cent of women. If you don’t give an opportunity to women, then you are cutting off the services of women. That means your country will not progress. If women don’t get an education and job opportunities, then society or a country never rises, and this is one mistake of your company." Ten days later, she received a telegram asking her to appear for an interview at Telco's Pune facility, at the company's expense. Her hostel mate suggested she use the opportunity to go to Pune for free and buy them the famous Pune saris at a lower cost! She collected Rs30 each from everyone who wanted a sari. When she looks back, she laughs at the reasons for her trip to Pune, but back then it seemed good enough to make the journey. During her interview, an elderly gentleman told her, "Do you know why we said lady candidates need not apply? The reason is that we have never employed any ladies on the shop floor. This is not a co-ed college; this is a factory. When it comes to academics, you are a first ranker throughout. We appreciate that, but people like you should work in research laboratories." Despite this, she was able to get the job. She became the first female engineer to be hired by Telco. The Man Who Saved Employees from Layoffs -In today's world, where many companies are laying off their employees, Ratan Tata saved the jobs. -In June 2024, Ratan Tata saved over 100 TISS employees from losing their jobs. -Employees received termination letters due to a lack of funding at TISS. -TISS administrators had been asking for funds from the Trust for six months. -They struggled to keep operations running without financial support. -On June 28, termination letters were given to 55 teaching and 60 non-teaching staff across Mumbai, Tuljapur, Hyderabad, and Guwahati campuses. -When Mr. Ratan Tata learned about the situation, he quickly secured the necessary resources. -He released Rs 5 crore from Tata Education Trust (TET) to cover expenses for the next 5 to 6 months. -Now, TISS has decided to reappoint the staff and bring all resources back to the institute.
