2024 Reflection as a Part-Time Swiggy Rider (P.S. It’s a long one) Curious to know what the experience is like, I became a Swiggy Delivery Executive in March'21, about 1.5 years before joining Swiggy as a Software Developer for the DE app. But the second wave of Covid got real, and I couldn’t get started. The idea lingered tho, and on 15th August'23, under the pretext of testing a UI revamp, I did my first delivery. What began as a feature-testing initiative turned into an eye-opening experience, helping me understand the challenges DEs face. Now, I look forward to each delivery, eager to see what new perspective it brings. Today, while writing my year-end review of 2024, I realised that the moments that have offered me the most insights were while delivering on a cycle or bike across different cities. I’m sorta excited to share a glimpse of my favourite takeaways from each city. In Mulund, #Mumbai, where I’ve lived my whole life, it felt like I rediscovered the place all over again. I was entering lanes I knew existed but had no clue where they led. It felt like I unlocked a new map in GTA! #Udaipur was a whole other vibe. On Saturday, I was a tourist—City Palace, cultural shows; on Sunday, I was navigating its residential streets, experiencing the quieter, low-key side of the city. Can’t decide which one I loved more. In Rohini, #Delhi, the sense of community hits different—big families, warm vibes, and just a wholesome energy. #Chandigarh was an outlier—it wasn’t fully stepping into a DE’s shoes as we delivered via a car, but it had its own charm, delivering alongside my teammates. #Goaa! I know this sounds over the top, but delivering in Calangute felt like delivering joy. Boy-gang house parties, middle-aged friends reuniting —everyone was just in this happy, holiday mood. I couldn’t wait to see who I’d deliver to next, it felt like I was crashing their celebrations in the best way possible. And #Bangalore. Oh, Bangalore. This city doesn’t play when it comes to delivery expectations. “Why aren’t you faster?” “What’s the delay?” I spent the day apologising: “Sorry, traffic,” “I’m new to this,” “I couldn’t figure out the entrance.” Honestly, every shift humbled me. I’d go home, work extra, and remind myself how lucky I am to have a tech job—I can’t afford to lose it! While the motivation is to understand DE pain points, tbh, I’ve grown to enjoy it, uncovering the nuances in challenges each city brings. For 2025, I hope to keep this going. Next on my list: Kolkata (super curious to understand the alcohol delivery flow) and maybe Kerala too. It’s odd to be this excited about delivering orders, but I’m pretty certain I’ll come across a whole new set of nuances. Anyway, delivering in Bangalore this weekend to test a feature I’m lowkey excited about. Let’s see🤞 Here’s to new experiences in 2025. Bye! (Don't know how to end a monologue)
