We have just crossed 10,000 monthly paid subscribers in India in less than 8 months at speakX (formerly Yellow Class). Here’s the story of our journey 👇 We began as Yellow Class, quickly gaining popularity through word of mouth. In less than a year, we became the most beloved platform for after-school programs for kids, achieving 5 million downloads driven by organic growth. It took us a year to figure out we could not monetize our free product, which had achieved product-market fit based on free engagement. However, our users were not willing to pay for the offering. We decided to pivot, and it took us six months to rebuild. One of the toughest decisions was to shut down a product with over 1 million monthly active users and start the journey from scratch again. With what we learned, we launched a new product, SpeakX.ai. Though many advised us to target the international market, believing it would be nearly impossible to succeed with a subscription-based model in India, we trusted in the strength of our product. Despite the challenges, we remained confident in our vision and belief in ourselves. In January of this year, we saw our first sign of success as our conversion funnel improved. Previously, our conversion rate was 0.1%, but it increased to 0.5% in January. We recognized this as a breakthrough, though we knew much work was ahead. Today, we have reached a 7% conversion rate and continue to grow each month. We’ve scaled the platform to approximately $0.5 million USD in annual recurring revenue (ARR) with positive cashflows at CM2 by offering a product priced at Rs 299/month (No service layer). Throughout this journey, we learned that the key is to always focus on solving for your customers, not just chasing numbers. While quick wins may seem exciting initially, they eventually crumble. Continuously solving problems and building value is the proper foundation of a strong company. We are still working on improving retention and engagement. Our goal for the end of this year isn’t to hit a specific revenue target but to achieve a positive NPS of 40+ before scaling the platform.
