Battle of 6E: Indigo vs. Mahindra . Here’s a classic case of a trademark battle brewing between two big names: IndiGo Airlines and Mahindra. The story began when Mahindra announced its electric vehicle, set to launch in February 2025, under the name “Mahindra BE 6E.” However, IndiGo has been using “6E” as part of its identity for years—it’s their airline’s callsign and a key element of their branding. The Trademark Tug-of-War IndiGo holds a registered trademark for ‘6E Link’ under various categories (Classes 9, 35, 39, and 16). These classes cover their advertising, services, and more. For context, trademark law has 45 classes—Classes 1-34 for products and Classes 35-45 for services. IndiGo's registration gives them exclusive rights to the use of “6E” in their domain. Mahindra applied for the trademark ‘BE 6E’, and it was accepted by the registrar, leading to a dispute. IndiGo argues that “6E” has been a part of its identity for 18 years and is integral to its brand. This isn’t the first trademark clash for IndiGo. The airline has also been locked in battles with the Tata Group and Go Group over similar issues. A Note for Founders As this unfolds, it’s a great reminder for founders: always register your brand name in India and major countries where you plan to operate. A strong trademark can save you from potential disputes down the road. For now, we’ll wait and see how this battle shapes up—will it be a smooth landing for IndiGo or Mahindra? Stay tuned! #trademark #jordensky
