Good to see that the NYT is revealing what many in India have been aware of for some time : that incinerating garbage is not the answer to managing India’s MSW problem . Waste to energy technology is not suitable for the waste characteristics in India . We would argue that Biomethanation to produce Biomethane and organic fertiliser is a far better option .
Accelerating affordable resource management & circular solutions in Global South, on a journey to zero-waste
NYT took half a decade to put this investigative piece out on the truth behind WtEs (incineration based) in India, particularly the notorious Okhla WtE plant in Delhi, standing right next to a residential colony… Some of us have been consistently writing about it. Hope the global coverage and work that collected samples and provides alarming health impact evidence gives the much needed momentum to this issue.... Poor compliance mechanisms, repeated environmental violations have not only impacted soil, water and air but has led to long-term effects on the residents staying closer to the Okhla plant. We do not need ‘quick fix’ ‘silver-bullet’ solutions for our cities, but holistic, circular resource management options that put people at the centre of it…. Please read! Thanks Maria Abi-Habib #bryandenton for this work. Startups driven by impact can play a significant role in advancing decarbonization efforts. These ventures often possess exceptional ideas and enthusiasm but encounter challenges related to funding, regulatory hurdles, and workforce issues, which can impede their progress. Therefore, it's time for businesses to embrace impact investing. Impact investing not only yields financial returns but also generates positive social and environmental impact, addressing climate change and social inequality. At Schneider Electric, we prioritize supporting impact-driven startups to make local impact. We offer early-stage and patient capital, utilize our expertise and networks, and provide mentorship and hands-on support. By blending private investment with an impact-first approach, we cultivate an environment where startups can innovate and flourish freely. Our investments have bolstered innovative startups such as: Okra: Decentralizing solar energy in Nigeria and Haiti. Agros: Promoting sustainable farming in South-East Asia. MyJouleBox: Developing mini-grids in Benin to support local enterprises. Carbon Masters: Reducing carbon emissions and diverting waste in India. It's essential for more businesses to acknowledge the transformative impact that investing for social, environmental, and financial returns can bring. There's immense untapped potential in doing so, and the time for businesses to act is now! Citizen warriors are making a daily difference in their communities. I take great pleasure in sharing the story of one of them - Padmashree Balaram, who I met through #SVP. She was the Lead Partner mentoring Vedan Trust, an NGO that had received a Grant from SVP towards Zero Waste campus initiatives. Watching her go about it was very inspiring and here's the story I found. She entered the field of Solid Waste Management to find better and more sustainable solutions. This led her to exploring various eco-friendly organisations and methods, finding dedicated volunteers, tirelessly collaborating with the ecosystem players. Her efforts culminated in Carbon Masters starting a Bio-CNG pilot plant in the Koramangala ward and it currently processes over 12 tons of wet waste per day! The biogas produced is directly piped to restaurants close by. This is a great example of de-centralized processing of ward waste and circular economy, partnering with organisations such as Carbon Masters and Saahas. This helped in reducing Carbon Emissions by up to 3000 tons per year and they also managed to get all households to start Home Composting! Koramangala Biogas Plant, along with BBMP, Citizen Volunteers received an award at the International Climate Change Conference in Germany, for implementing collaborative solutions for local climate action. The integrated waste processing unit in Koramangala is one of a kind in Bangalore, which has a DWCC, Thermocol and mattress processing, C&D and bulk waste center, where over 400kgs of thermocol and 600kgs of mattress waste are collected every day! If so much can be done in ONE Ward, how much more efficient it would be if all Wards followed suit?! Padmashree also ventured into Madiwala Market (one of the biggest whole sale fruits, vegetables and flower market in this part of Bangalore). She put in processes, controls and methods to ensure source segregation was implemented, which led to diverting close to 9 tons per day of vegetables away from land fills. These in turn are picked by NGOs, community kitchens, Goshalas and Piggeries. She went a step beyond and ensured toilets were constructed, basic electric lighting was installed for the comfort and safety of the vendors! Working diligently with the local MLA, residents, volunteers, solution providers, garbage contractors, logistics owners and government /municipal authorities to make this ‘magic’ happen, she has clearly demonstrated the power of persistence, collaboration and team work. More recently I saw her guide the firebrand Suhasini of Vedan Trust and oversee the inauguration of the Zero Waste Campus at the office of the Bangalore Commissioner of Police, with quiet and gentle leadership. Padmashree is a shining example of how one person's passion can make a real difference to people and the planet. Let's celebrate her tenacity and commitment to a greener future! #WasteManagement #Sustainability #CommunityImpact
