#MedicalMight A multi-disciplinary team of doctors from the Institute of Medical Sciences, #BanarasHinduUniversity, has successfully performed a complex procedure to remove a tumor from the inferior vena cava (IVC) of a ten-year-old boy diagnosed with Wilms’ tumor. The IVC is the major vein responsible for transporting blood from the lower body back to the heart. The tumor had extended into the right atrium (one of the four chambers of the heart). The medical team, led by Prof. Vaibhav Pandey from the Department of Pediatric Surgery, included Prof. Arvind Pandey and Prof. Siddharth Lakhotiya (Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery), Dr. Pratibha Rai (Department of Cardiology), and Dr. R.B. Singh and Dr. Sanjeev (Anesthesiology). Other members of the team were Dr. Ruchira, Dr. Seth Kacchap, and Dr. Bhanumati Kaushik. The surgery, which lasted nearly 10 hours, was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, the tumor was removed from the kidney, IVC, and liver, while in the second stage, cardiac surgery was performed. This involved temporarily stopping the heart to remove the tumor thrombus from the right atrium. The complex surgery required exceptional surgical skills to manage significant blood loss while preserving normal structures. The surgery, which could have otherwise cost up to Rs. 5 lakh, was performed at a nominal cost of Rs. 25,000 with the support of the Sir Sunderlal Hospital administration. This high-quality surgical care stands as a testament to the remarkable potential and skills of BHU's Institute of Medical Sciences. #MedicalSciences #HealthSciences #MedicalCare #HealthCare #SurgicalExcellence #MedicalResearch #HealthResearch #BanarasHinduUniversity

#BHUResearchFlash A study by a team of scientists, led by those from #BHU and CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (Hyderabad) and including researchers from other institutions, has revealed new insights into the genetic origins of the Nicobarese people. The findings have been published in the European Journal of Human Genetics. The study conducted a detailed genetic analysis using DNA markers to explore the ancestry and genetic affinities of the Nicobarese with South and Southeast Asian populations. The results suggest that the Nicobar Islanders settled in the archipelago approximately 5,000 years ago. The study was led by Prof. Gyaneshwer Chaubey from the Department of Zoology, #BanarasHinduUniversity, Varanasi, and Dr. Kumarasamy Thangaraj from CSIR-CCMB, Hyderabad. Other members of the team include Dr. Rahul Mishra, Dr. Prajjval Pratap Singh, Shailesh Desai, Pratik Pandey, and Dr. Sachin Tiwari from BHU, Dr. Niraj Rai from BSIP Lucknow, Dr. Rakesh Tamang from Calcutta University, and Dr. Prashanth Suravajhala from Amrita Vishwavidyapeetham.
