Kite flying in Berlin? That works! And how it works - former piles of rubbish and large parks turn out to be Eldorados for kite flying. All you need is your kite, a little bit of wind, some space and of course it can't hurt to have some tasty snacks in your luggage. Here comes our selection of the most beautiful and windiest kite spots in and around Berlin.
Tip 1: The Drachenberg on Teufelsberg - the name says it all
Not a natural mountain, but definitely the highest elevation in Berlin and therefore an excellent place to fly your kite. The 120-metre-high mountain of rubble, which was measured at 114.7 metres until it was remeasured in 2013, is of course not an insider tip, but a must for all kite fans: the Drachenberg next to the former Teufelsberg spy station is a place that couldn't be more dreamlike for kite flying. Even if the journey and climb up the hill are a little arduous, you will be rewarded with a great view. There is always a good breeze here. Ideal conditions for kite professionals and amateurs to spend a day.
Where: Teufelsseechaussee 10, Wilmersdorf

Tip 2: The expanse of Tempelhofer Feld
A wide field, hardly any trees and always sufficient wind speed - the largest open space in Berlin, right in the middle of the city, is an ideal place for kite flying. The wind can pick up speed on this flat plain, which is why the field is not only suitable for kite flying in autumn. Even out of season, you can always see a colourful hustle and bustle of windsurfers and kite enthusiasts here.
Where: Tempelhofer Damm, Tempelhof or Columbiadamm and Oderstraße, Neukölln

Tip 3: Hahneberg - twice
Attention: There are two Hahnebergs next to each other: The smaller natural Hahneberg including the historic fortress and the higher Müllberg (rubbish mountain) right next to it, which is also known as the new Hahneberg. Although the smaller of the two offers a relatively small area for kites compared to other airfields, the wind conditions are ideal.
Where: Hahnebergweg 50, Spandau

Tip 4: Lübars leisure park - kite flying on a lofty hill
Even further north, you can catch the perfect area for the perfect gust. The leisure park in Reinickendorf is an Eldorado for kite enthusiasts, as there is also a great mountain here. This forms the heart and centre of the extensive natural area, which also houses a park and an adventure playground and invites you to take a nice walk.
Where: An der Malche/Campestraße 11, Reinickendorf
Tip 5: Tempelhofer Feld - Festival of Giant Kites
For all those who can't get enough of kite flying, every September you can visit the Festival of Giant Kites on Tempelhofer Feld. There are demonstrations of large kites and interesting information about kite flying to marvel at. World and European champions, among others, will be demonstrating their skills in various kite demonstrations. For younger visitors, there will be kite making, bouncy castles and face painting. All of this is supported by a varied stage programme with music and talks. In 2024, the festival will take place for the ninth time on 21 September.
Where: Tempelhofer Damm, Tempelhof or Columbiadamm and Oderstraße, Neukölln

Tip 6: Britzer Garten - beautiful landscapes and a lot of space
The Britzer Garten is one of the most beautiful and extensive parks in Berlin: wonderful garden art, nature and hilly landscapes are spread over 90 hectares of land. The ideal starting point is the play and sunbathing lawn at Britzer Höhe, which is best reached from the entrance on Buckower Damm. Then stroll through the beautiful garden, which is particularly impressive in autumn with its dahlia exhibition and in spring with its tulip exhibition.
Where: Buckower Damm and Mohriner Allee, Neukölln
Tip 7: Treptower Park - kite flying next to monuments
The park is particularly suitable for children and their first kite tricks. You're sure to find a spot on one of the many meadows. If you've had enough of flying kites, take a look around - the park has much more to offer: its own harbour where you can hire kayaks and pedal boats, the popular Isle of Youth (Insel der Jugend), the centrepiece of which is the island café with a large garden and green sunbathing lawn. Here you can enjoy coffee and cake as well as healthy and hearty meals. In the park, you will find a new playground and, last but not least, the impressive Soviet Memorial, which commemorates the liberation of Berlin by the Red Army. Nearby is also the Archenhold Observatory in Treptow, the oldest and largest public observatory in Germany, which invites you to observe the stars. It has the longest refracting telescope in the world.
Where: Alt-Treptow, Treptow

Tip 8: Come to kite festival at Volkspark Potsdam
In addition to the botanical tropical house, the mini golf course and a water playground, you will find plenty of open spaces to fly your kite on the former grounds of the Federal Garden Show. The large meadow park in the Volkspark is particularly good for this. The park is around 65 hectares in size - enough space for the kites not to get tangled up or be disturbed by others. Incidentally, the 35th Berlin/Brandenburg International Kite Festival will be held at the Biosphäre on 7 and 8 September 2024.
Where: Georg-Hermann-Allee 101, Potsdam
Tip 9: Enjoy the quiet weekdays at Mauerpark Berlin
As a former Wall no man's land, there are few to no tall trees or buildings on the grounds of the Mauerpark, making the park a popular place to fly kites together on windy days. Those who need a break can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere in the park, listen to street musicians or watch the action from the hill at the edge of the park. Tip: take advantage of the slightly quieter days during the week, as it can get very crowded here at the weekend.
Where: Gleimstraße 55, Prenzlauer Berg
Tip 10: Freizeitpark Marienfelde - Flying fun for everyone
You will also find ideal conditions on the southern outskirts of Berlin. The Marienfelde leisure park is one of the best kite locations in the capital. With a height of 77 metres, the former rubbish dump attracts visitors with a good all-round view of the surrounding area. The best place for your kite is on the large open space east of the Diedersdorfer Weg - here flying fun is guaranteed for beginners and professionals alike. Please note that this is a nature reserve and rare birds breed here in spring and summer - then please switch to another airfield.
Where: Diedersdorfer Weg, Tempelhof
Tip 11: If you do not have a kite
If you don't have a kite of your own for the many possibilities, then take a look at Flying Colors. They offer you a large selection in all colours, shapes and variations. Kids kites, stunt kites and traction kites - a paradise for kite and kite fans. Here you will also find frisbees, juggling articles, yoyos, bummerangs and much more.
