Etymology 1

From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *nyey (“younger sibling”). Cognate with Akha [script needed] (à-njí, “younger sibling”) (STEDT). Luce compares additionally Old Chinese 弟 (OC *diːlʔ, *diːls, “younger brother”) (though the initials don't seem to match).[1]

Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (ñi "even; equal; level; accord"). Luce gives Old Chinese 依 (OC *qɯl, “in accord with”) as a cognate;[2] Zhengzhang's reconstruction of the Old Chinese form is dissimilar, though Baxter and Sagart's (*ʔəj) looks more similar.”
