Etymology 1
[edit]From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *nyey (“younger sibling”). Cognate with Akha [script needed] (à-njí, “younger sibling”) (STEDT). Luce compares additionally Old Chinese 弟 (OC *diːlʔ, *diːls, “younger brother”) (though the initials don't seem to match).[1]
