Verb
[edit]הִפִּיל • (hipíl) (hif'il construction, passive counterpart הופל / הֻפַּל)
- to drop (something)
- to throw (something), to throw (something) down
- to thwart, impede, obstruct
- to destroy, bring down
- to defeat
- to shoot down (such as an idea or suggestion)
- to miscarry, abort
- to knock over, make fall, bring down
- (colloquial) to impose upon someone
Usage notes
[edit]- When someone has accidentally dropped something by losing his or her grip on it, it is more common to use נָפַל לְ־ (nafál l'-, “to fall for”) rather than הִפִּיל (hipíl). In that case, the subject denotes the dropped item, and is usually postponed:
- נפל לי העיפרון. ― nafál lí ha'iparón. ― I dropped the pencil; [literally] Fell to-me the-pencil.
