Etymology

From Proto-Samic *ńālmē, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *ńälmä. Cognates include Northern Mansi не̄лум (nēlum, “tongue”), Hungarian nyelv, Eastern Mari йылме (jylme) and Northern Sami njálbmi.
