Root X Morpheme

[edit]

I am not a Linguist; I have been acquiring an overview of Linguistics concepts mostly through Wikipedia.

In the article about Root (linguistics), I found the following information:

Roots can be either free morphemes or bound morphemes. Root morphemes are essential for affixation and compounds.

The root of a word is a unit of meaning (morpheme) (...)

In Linguistics, is "root" a synonym of "morpheme"? The article seems to say so. If that is the case, the articles Root (linguistics) and Morpheme should be merged. Otherwise, the difference between them should be better expressed in both articles. --Antonielly 15:04, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am not a Linguist, and this page[1] seems systematic to me. It classifies Root (linguistics), stem (linguistics), affix, and clitic as a type of morpheme. Maybe there are other classification systems, but at least this should give others some ideas about the relationships of such terms. -- waholayo 04:19, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
