Byun "ByuN" Hyun-woo (born May 8, 1993) is a Korean Terran player who is currently playing for Shopify Rebellion.

Wings of Liberty[edit]

During the GSL3, ByuN became known as NEXExcrement on the South Korean ladder and has managed to consistently scale the Top 200. His first significant accomplishment came from competition as a Terran player in the Gainward SC2 Tournament, which began with 768 participants. Not being one of the 8 seeded players, ByuN played the single-elimination tournament until reaching the Round of 32 where he went on to defeat Genius and Zenio before losing 2-3 to NesTea. He ended up in 4th place after losing the bronze match to MarineKing 0-3.

ByuN was once a member of the Korean clan NEX, and he was part of the initial roster that merged with the Zenith clan to form the professional gaming team ZeNEX in October 2010.[1] When the merge occurred, he was known by his "Bleach" ID.

On October 8, 2011, it was announced that ByuN had joined Prime.[2]

Global StarCraft II League[edit]

Open Seasons[edit]

ByuN qualified for the first two open seasons of the GOMTV Global Starcraft II League. Playing as Protoss, he was knocked out in the Round of 32 and 64 by Ensnare and Loner respectively. Although unable to qualify for Season 3 during his race switch from Protoss to Terran, his previous qualifications were enough to make the first A-Class tournament of 2011.

Code A[edit]

ByuN was able to reach the finals of the GSL 2011 January Code A tournament. He swept through a majority of his brackets, beating Golden in the Ro32, Killer in the Ro16, and July in the Ro8, all 2-0. This qualified him for the Up and Down matches where he will get a chance to advance to Code S. In the Ro4, ByuN played a TvT against Lyn, and defeated him 2-1. In the finals of the Code A tournament, ByuN played oGsTOP in a very even best of 7. TOP ended up barely defeating ByuN 4-3, where TOP tended to win the shorter games and ByuN tended to win the longer, more macro based matches. However, the final match was 15 minutes long, where ByuN was unable to handle TOP's combination of excellent harass punishing his constant use of a single build throughout the series in the early and mid-game which allowed TOP to have superior macro in the late game.[3]

ByuN played in the Up and Down matches, playing against opponents that he chooses due to being a finalist in Code A. His choices were rather surprising compared to TOP's, selecting Leenock, a relatively accomplished Zerg player, and his own teammate, LiveForever. He managed to win a close series against Leenock 2-1, advancing himself into Code S of the next season of GSL.

ByuN played in Code A in GSL October where he lost in the first round 1-2 to Oz, dropping out of the GSL for the first time.

ByuN would not play in the following 2 GSLs, but would come back for the 2012 GSL Season 2 and play in Code A, reaching the Ro24 defeating big names like NaDa, but ultimately losing to TheStC, still he managed to get into Code S via the Up and Down matches.

Code S[edit]

ByuN made his first Code S appearance in GSL March, he would advance out of the group stages by beating Zenio although falling to Clide. In the Round of 16 he would be swept by MC. The proceeding season in May fared worse for ByuN who would be sent to the up/down matches after only besting RainBOw. He held off aLive to retain his status. ByuN's deepest run in Code S to date would be in GSL July, where he made it into the round of 4 going through players such as NaDa and Bomber before being stopped by LosirA. Even with the success ByuN had in GSL July, he would not be able to replicate his results in GSL August, as he went 0-2 in his group and thus had to play in the Up and Down Matches. There, he disappointingly went 0-3 in his group, and dropped down to Code A.

In the 2012 GSL Season 3 he would make a big mark, defeating HerO and Seed in the Ro32 and advancing 2-0. In the Ro16 he would also go 2-0 against KeeN and Genius and advance to the Ro8. There he would face NesTea, and in a shocker he would sweep the series 3-0, moving on to play Seed in the semifinals.

Heart of the Swarm[edit]

Individual Leagues[edit]

With the Heart of the Swarm release and introduction of WCS, ByuN struggled to return to Premier League.

He played in 2013 WCS Season 1 Korea GSL: Up and Down Matches for a Premier League spot. ByuN won a game against Bbyong, but lost against Sniper, Flying and soO, failing to advance to Premier League.

In WCS Season 1 Challenger League, ByuN was able to beat VINES (2-0) and KeeN (2-0), eventually losing his final match for advancing to Premier League against Rain (1-2). Another chance for WCS Season 2 Premier League came with Up&Down games. Again ByuN was unable to advance, losing to Super, ParalyzE and Curious, winning only against EffOrt.

In 2013 WCS Season 2 Challenger League, ByuN lost his first match against Dear (1-2), and he dropped from the Challenger League. However, thanks to winning Up & Down Spots Tournament he secured a spot for another Up&Down games for Season 3. Again, in the Up&Down games, ByuN was unable to qualify for Season 3 Premier League. He won against Life and Bang, but lost to soO and herO.

In 2013 WCS Season 3 Challenger League, ByuN beat Sniper (2-1) and lost to Avenge (1-2). Because of changes in the WCS format, there was no Up&Down games for another season and ByuN needed to qualify for a new Code A format.

ByuN also played in the qualifiers for IEM Sao Paulo. He beat PartinG (2-0) but lost to Sacsri (1-2), and was eliminated from the competition.

Team Leagues[edit]

In the second week of the playoffs of the 2013 GSTL Season 1 Group Stage Week 2, and on the day following Sound's dramatic all-kill of team New Star HoSeo, ByuN was sent out first against AZUBU. ByuN fought through SuperNova, VINES, San and Symbol successively to secure the all-kill and give his team the lead in the standings at the time, with StarTale just behind them (on the same points but as Prime had beaten them Prime was 1st place). Following weeks, he was unable to help his team. He lost against MadBull, CranK, First and Super while was able to win only against Ryung. With 5 wins overall, ByuN and Maru (also with 5 wins) were the best Prime players in the 2013 GSTL Season 1.

Despite being in Prime's roster for every round of 2014 Proleague, ByuN did not play any games in Proleague. ByuN and Barbie were the only Prime players that haven't played in Proleague.

The Disappearance[edit]

His games against Sacsri in the IEM Sao Paulo Qualifiers, played on December 18, 2013 are his last official played games (as of yet). Since then, ByuN has stopped playing in official tournaments. He was submitted to play in the 2014 GSL Season 1 Qualifiers, 2014 GSL Season 2 Qualifiers and 2014 GSL Global Championship Qualifiers, but he never showed up for his games. He did not play any game in 2014 Proleague, or even showed up in the Proleague studio with his team. No official comments about ByuN's disappearance were made either by ByuN, Prime coaches or Prime players.

On February 13, 2014 when it was announced that MarineKing is returning to Starcraft 2, Prime coach, Gerrard said, "we are so glad that Marineking has returned to SC2 at the worst period for us. Probably our bad result from round 1 made him enthusiastic. He is more enthusiastic than anyone, and with Byun, we will once again show the power of Prime terrans."[4] However, he would not reappear in official matches until 04/18/2015.

Legacy of the Void[edit]

The Return[edit]

On April 4, 2015, ByuN played and won OlimoLeague #28, and over the next months participated in many more online tournaments, winning 23 Leifeng cups and 7 more olimoleagues (as of December 2, 2015), but never participated in official matches for team Prime. On the 18th of October it was revealed that he had joined the Chinese organization X-Team. Over the following months he came to be feared as one of the strongest players of the LotV beta. On the 17th of December, 2015, ByuN qualified for Season 1 of SSL 2016, making his first appearance at a premier tournament in over two years.

ByuN won 2016 GSL Season 2 with a victory over sOs, therefore becoming the first teamless player to win a GSL. He then went on to win 2016_WCS_Global_Playoffs_and_Finals with a victory over Dark.

The Break[edit]

ByuN placed 0-2 in his Round of 32 group in GSL 2018 Season 3 Code S. Fans speculated that ByuN has hand/wrist injuries that may have affected his performance.[5]

On January 29, 2019, ByuN started serving his mandatory military service.[6] He is expected to come back early September 2020. He stated that he would continue with StarCraft 2 following his service.

On August 18, 2020, ByuN returned in the qualifier of GSL. He defeated Hurricane (2-1), Dream (2-1) and Cure (2-0) to qualify for GSL 2020 Season 3. He tweeted about his return, stating "ByuN is back".[7]

Trivia[edit]

  • Was the first player in the GSL to switch race, from Protoss to Terran.
  • Was promised a puppy by ZeNEX if he reached the semifinals in GSL.[8] After defeating Bomber in the Round of 8 of GSL July, he received a puppy from a friend.[9]
  • He brought his puppy to the GSTL match vs fOu and had to run from the studio during the 2nd match so that it could pee.
  • Was accused of match-fixing in an ESV TV Korean Weekly match against CoCa. CoCa was demoted by SlayerS and ByuN was banned from participating in tournaments by his team, Prime.[10]
  • Among his peers, he is known for his love for INnoVation and Maru. During the group selection event for the Ro16 of the second season of Code S in 2016, he explained that this was for different reasons. He views Maru, whom he has known for many years, as a little brother. INnoVation, on the other hand, is a star player who ByuN idolizes to an intense degree. When asked who he would save first if Maru and INnoVation were both in a life-or-death situation, ByuN said he didn't even need to think about the answer, and that INnoVation would always take priority.[11]
  • With his victory in the 2016 GSL Season 2 Finals, he is the first player in the history of both StarCraft: Broodwar and StarCraft 2 to have reached and won the final of a Premier Korean League while being teamless. He was nicknamed "The One Man Army" after achieving this feat.
  • He is the only player to have won the last GSL Season of the season and then go beyond the Semifinals of the WCS Global Finals.
  • He is the second Terran player, after MVP, to win a WCS Global Finals.
  • Was chosen as 2016 ESPN Esports Player of the Year.[12] Other nominees were Faker (League of Legends), Coldzera (Counter-Strike), Zero (Smash) and Hungrybox (Smash).
  • ByuN is one of the Four Horsemen of Terran, alongside INnoVation, TY, and Maru.[13]
