It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the The Ninth ACM International Workshop on Wireless Network Testbeds, Experimental Evaluation, and Characterization -- WiNTECH'14. This year's workshop continues the tradition of being the premier forum for presentation of research results and experience reports on leading edge issues of experimental wireless networking. The mission of the symposium is to bring together researchers working in the broad area of experimental wireless networking. This workshop will serve as a forum to share new ideas/experiences in all experimental aspects of wireless networks and systems, and facilitate discussions of key unresolved challenges in this area.
The call for papers attracted numerous submissions from Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the United States. The program committee accepted 10 papers covering a variety of diverse topics focused on experimental wireless networking, including interference management, whitespace and spectrum management, and wireless medium access control. In addition, the program includes a exciting demo session, and a keynote speech by Prof. Suman Banerjee, University of Wisconsin- Madison.

BeHop: a testbed for dense WiFi networks
We present BeHop, a wireless testbed for dense WiFi networks often seen in residential and enterprise settings. BeHop aims to provide insights on the operation of dense deployments, and evaluate how different WiFi management strategies affect user ...
A framework for remote automation, configuration, and monitoring of real-world experiments
The evaluation of wireless and mobile communication systems in real-world testbeds can be cumbersome and tedious. Experiments require manual intervention to coordinate the execution of involved programs and to collect test results on each involved ...
Comparisons of high performance software radios with size, weight, area and power constraints
Software-Defined Radios (SDR), which digitize RF spectrum and perform traditional receiver tasks in software, are becoming increasingly viable as an enabling technology for mobile networks and sensor networks. The concurrent rise in commercially ...
Towards a characterization of white spaces databases errors: an empirical study
Spectrum regulators consider geo-location databases as the most reliable source of spectrum information for White Space Devices (WSDs). Geo-location databases protect TV band incumbents by keeping track of TV transmitters, and their protected service ...

Dynamic Spectrum Access aims at exploiting underutilized frequency bands towards improving wireless network performance. In this context, spectrum sensing is employed, in order to monitor spectrum occupancy and drive appropriate adaptation decisions. ...
Potential pitfalls of the message in message mechanism in modern 802.11 networks
We study the performance impact of the Message in Message (MIM) mechanism in modern 802.11 networks. The MIM mechanism refers to the capability of receiver to abandon an ongoing reception of an 802.11 MAC frame and shift to decode another frame with a ...
Understanding the impact of cross technology interference on IEEE 802.15.4
Over the last few decades, we witnessed notable progress in wireless communication. This has led to rapid emergence of heterogeneous wireless technologies that share the RF spectrum in an un-coordinated way. Such a coexistence introduces high ...
Timings matter: standard compliant ieee 802.11 channel access for a fully software-based SDR architecture
We present a solution for enabling standard compliant channel access for a fully software-based Software Defined Radio (SDR) architecture. With the availability of a GNU Radio implementation of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) ...
System architecture for delay tolerant media distribution for rural south africa
Wireless communication offers access to information even to users living in areas where little to no access to affordable communication channels is available. Delay Tolerant Networks~(DTNs) enable content distribution in such areas, using mobility of ...
Implementation and evaluation of a flexible, load-adaptive link layer protocol
We design, implement and evaluate a load-adaptive MAC protocol based on a flexible, component-based link layer architecture. We first present the overall architecture that facilitates a generic data transfer protocol used by ordinary user applications ...
Demo: co-primary spectrum sharing with inter-operator D2D trial
A co-primary spectrum sharing trial is presented in this paper. It is presenting a flexible way to share resources between multiple operators in order to increase spectral efficiency. In this trial the differences in traffic patterns of themobile ...
Demo: a testbed to evaluate frequency-hopping anti-jamming techniques in ieee 802.11
Wireless communication is inherently prone to disruption by interference. Frequency Hopping (FH) can counter interference and promises to enable communication again even in the presence of intentional interference by jammers. Evaluations of this anti-...

Nowadays, the overcrowding of ISM bands is becoming an evident limitation for the performance and widespread usage of 802.11 and 802.15.4 technologies. In this demo, we prove that it is possible to opportunistically exploit the inter-technology ...
