Underwater networking promises to open exciting new frontiers for scientific, environmental, commercial, safety, and military applications. Indeed, rivers, oceans, and lakes occupy a central place in the world, and impact our daily lives and are themselves impacted by human activities. Networked underwater systems are still in their infancy, and while the vision of an "Underwater Wireless Internet" may still appear remote, there are great opportunities today for exciting research and development with potentially broad impacts.
Since 2006, WUWNet has been the premiere ACM venue for underwater networking research, featuring strong communications and networking papers. This year, we transitioned WUWNet from being a stand-alone workshop into a conference, with an extended scope and program. The technical program committee is happy to present 21 full papers, six short papers, and 19 extended abstracts presented as posters, featuring top-notch research on topics as diverse as new applications of underwater networking to new physical-layer communication techniques. The total number of papers presented this year is about double compared to previous editions of the conference. The conference attracted interested from throughout the world. This year, about 45% of the paper authors are from North America, 35% from Asia, 10% from Europe, 5% from Oceania and 5% from South America.
