Abstract

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the First International Workshop on Underwater Networks (WUWNet'06). The goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers and practicing engineers from the areas of underwater communications and networking who are interested in applying their expertise to the development of future underwater networks. The call for papers attracted 30 submissions from the United States, Australia, India, South Korea, China, Singapore and Italy. The program committee accepted 10 full-length papers and 6 posters, included as short papers. We are also delighted to include 3 invited speakers. The papers cover a variety of topics in underwater communications, networking, and applications. Specifically, they address acoustic modem technology, applications of autonomous underwater vehicles, methods for localization, network topology discovery, media access control, routing protocols, and deployment considerations. In addition, the program includes a panel entitled: Underwater Networks: Methods, Systems, and Applications. We hope these proceedings will serve as a valuable reference for users, engineers, and researchers interested in underwater networks.

Acoustic propagation considerations for underwater acoustic communications network development

Underwater acoustic communications systems are significantly challenged by the acoustic propagation characteristics of the underwater environment. There are a wide range of physical processes that impact underwater acoustic communications and the ...

Article
Modulation and demodulation techniques for underwater acoustic communications

This paper is focused on the characteristics of underwater acoustic communication channels and their implications on the design of bandwidth efficient modulation and demodulation techniques. Both noncoherent and phase coherent modulation and ...

Article
State-of-the-art in protocol research for underwater acoustic sensor networks

In this paper, architectures for two-dimensional and three-dimensional underwater sensor networks are discussed. A detailed overview on the current solutions for medium access control, network, and transport layer protocols are given and open research ...

Article
Wide area ocean networks: architecture and system design considerations

Wide area ocean networks for monitoring and scientific exploratory purposes are in various stages of design; small-scale networks are already in various stages of deployment and testing. Clearly, cost-effective coverage is a primary underlying principle;...

Article
Localization in underwater sensor networks: survey and challenges

In underwater sensor networks (UWSNs), determining the location of every sensor is important and the process of estimating the location of each node in a sensor network is known as localization. While various localization algorithms have been proposed ...

Article
On the relationship between capacity and distance in an underwater acoustic communication channel

Path loss of an underwater acoustic communication channel depends not only on the transmission distance, but also on the signal frequency. As a result, the useful bandwidth depends on the transmission distance, a feature that distinguishes an underwater ...

Article
Deployment analysis in underwater acoustic wireless sensor networks

In this paper, different deployment strategies for two-dimensional and three-dimensional communication architectures for UnderWater Acoustic Sensor Networks (UW-ASNs) are proposed, and statistical deployment analysis for both architectures is provided. ...

Article
An optimization framework for joint sensor deployment, link scheduling and routing in underwater sensor networks

Underwater sensor networks are a very interesting case of wireless communication in extreme conditions. They exploit acoustic communication in sea water and are nowadays used in surveillance and monitoring applications. These networks present very ...

Electromagnetic communications within swarms of autonomous underwater vehicles

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) have great value as platforms for sensors. While traditional AUVs have been large platforms that tend to operate alone or in very small groups, there has been recent interest in using very large numbers of small ...

Article
Design of a low-cost acoustic modem for moored oceanographic applications

This paper discusses the current state of the art systems of real time telemetry on oceanographic moorings and describes the design requirements for making acoustic modem data telemetry a more widely used form of data telemetry for moored oceanographic ...

Article
Low-power acoustic modem for dense underwater sensor networks

Significant progress has been made in terrestrial sensor networks to revolutionize sensing and data collection. To bring the concept of long-lived, dense sensor networks to the underwater environment, there is a compelling need to develop low-cost and ...

Article
Status packet deprecation and store-forward routing in AUSNet

AUSNet is a functional network of autonomous undersea vehicles. We present two novel algorithms to enhance AUSNet. In live in-water testing, a packet queueing problem in which stale status packets accummulated while AUVs were out of transmission range, ...

Sensor networks of freely drifting autonomous underwater explorers

With the increasing sophistication of both manned and unmanned systems for remote ocean exploration, a wealth of knowledge about heretofore-unknown oceanic processes has become available. However, no technologies currently exist to observe organisms and ...

Article
Cooperative multihop communication for underwater acoustic networks

In this work, multi-hop cooperative schemes for underwater sensor networks are studied and shown to be highly energy efficient. Also, the signal model for a multipath channel is derived taking into account the interference from other nodes. It is shown ...

Article
Reconfigurable acoustic modem for underwater sensor networks

There is a growing interest for underwater sensor networks where long term monitoring of water masses around the world for scientific, environmental, commercial, and military reasons is desired. In this paper we will present the concept of a highly ...

Article
On applying network coding to underwater sensor networks

High error rates and long propagation delays in underwater sensor networks call for efficient error-recovery schemes. We believe network coding is a promising technique for this purpose because of the broadcast nature of acoustic channels and ...

Article
A MAC protocol for ad-hoc underwater acoustic sensor networks

A medium access control (MAC) protocol is proposed that is suitable for non-synchronized ad-hoc networks, and in particular for the energy-constrained underwater acoustic networks which are characterized by long propagation delays. The protocol exploits ...
