FIR-Filter: based Ambient Noise Implementation for Acoustic Underwater Communication Analysis

Published: 13 February 2020 Publication History

Abstract

Underwater communication of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) has intense demands on acoustic modems caused by the continually changing signal propagation due to ambient noise, multipath propagation, and other effects of the underwater acoustic channel. In this extended abstract, we present a model-based approach to generate ambient noise with finite impulse response (FIR)-filters over the desired power spectral density (PSD). Furthermore, we compare commonly used alternatives, like additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Knudsen curve. We show that the ambient noise generated by FIR-filters has the formally desired PSD and provides an up to 15 % better estimation for a selectable frequency spectrum compared to AWGN.
