More missing horses
[edit]In addition to the stub list I posted at my talk (see above) here are some "redlinks" of articles on major horses we haven't created yet and are well worth looking at (hint: Best not to do ones on living animals unless super-duper notable (like American Pharoah, or at least run them past WPEQ before trying):
- Arabians
Though already mentioned at Sheila Varian, these two are probably significant enough for a breakout article of their own:
For examples of a "good enough" article you can use as a template for syntax and formatting, try Khemosabi or Mesaoud. See also Category:Arabian and part-Arabian horses for what's already been done. For an example of a featured article (best example), look at Barbara L or Go Man Go. Montanabw(talk) 03:27, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
- Others
- Midnight Sun (horse) - major Tennessee Walking Horse sire
- Smart Little Lena (Quarter Horse)
Just ideas. Most of the major Thoroughbreds are at least started, though they have over 3000 stubs at WikiProject horse racing Category:Stub-Class Horse racing articles. Have fun! Montanabw(talk) 03:27, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
I will do some research on them. Arabians are very rare in my area so most of my Arabian experience has been over the web. However, I've heard tons about Midnight Sun, and I've actually ridden a Smart Little Lena daughter. :) White Arabian mare (talk) 20:39, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
Wrote the Midnight Sun article. It nearly gave me a stroke to see his picture on the site I used for research; he was almost identical to a reserve WGC Walker at the barn I learned to ride at! Undoubtedly the horse I knew was one of Midnight Sun's many descendants, although I can't find out because I don't know his registered name. White Arabian mare (talk) 21:33, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
- AWESOME! You are off to a good start as a wikipedia editor! I added some links and templates, feel free to swipe the syntax, the hands template is particularly nice to use, you just type {{hands|15}} and it automatically fomats it as 15 hands (60 inches, 152 cm) - all measurement conversions and stuff! The {{convert}} template can do the same thing for weight- giving you imperial and metric measurements, handy for our colleagues in Europe. Montanabw(talk) 03:19, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
Ok thanks. I didn't know how to add the centimeters conversion and I'm TERRIBLE at metric measurements. White Arabian mare (talk) 14:45, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
Changing title of article?
[edit]On the Hank the Cowdog page where it lists all the books in the series, one of the titles contained a typo ("of" instead of "on"). I corrected it but the title is also incorrect on the page about the book, and I can't find a way to fix the title without creating a whole new page, which is unnecessary. The page is The Wounded Buzzard of Christmas Eve. How do I fix this? White Arabian mare (talk) 20:45, 25 August 2015 (UTC)
- I'll do a move, look for the "move" tab and you will see how it works the next time
Ok thanks.White Arabian mare (talk) 20:58, 25 August 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
Hello again White Arabian mare, It will be great if you can add to Serafix the referces pointed out by Montanabw on the talk page of the article. You can use this templates to so: {{Cite web}}, {{Cite news}} and {{Cite book}}. The easy way to use them is to click on cite on the menu at the top of the edit window and then select from the templates list the one that you want to use. Just fill in the parameters you want and they will be formatted for you. You can follow this links to find out more: References, Reliable sources and Citing sources. If you have any doubts do not hesitate to ask. Welcome again and enjoy your edits. --Crystallizedcarbon (talk) 14:57, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
Ok I will go see if I can do that, thanks. White Arabian mare (talk) 16:07, 26 August 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- Hello again, I see that you added a reference, I would encourage you to try the method I described above. you first have to move the cursor to the end of the sentence or paragraph that you want to source, then click on cite on the menu bar just above the text form and follow the steps above. Regards. --Crystallizedcarbon (talk) 09:15, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
I will try it if I can, I'm editing off a smartphone so that may effect it. I don't have a computer with internet access because I'm a writer and I'm afraid that somebody could hack my computer and erase a year's worth of work in a second!White Arabian mare (talk) 13:51, 27 August 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- It's always a good idea to back up your work on an external drive and keep virus protection software up to date! I've never tried to edit off a phone (I still have a dumb phone... LOL) but usually in the editing window there will be icons for inserting references inline. Manually you can just type "ref tags" and a raw url, which is better than nothing. See WP:CITE for the syntax, (a very basic cite looks like this: Here is raw urls in a footnote with proper syntax.<ref>htttp:www.rawurl.org</ref> Hope that helps! Montanabw(talk) 03:52, 28 August 2015 (UTC)
I do put it on floppy disks but we have such slow internet anyway it wasn't worth it. :P Anyway I just use a phone for now, but we're looking into getting a hot spot from the cell phone carrier, which would enable me to get on the web from my laptop. I added a reference about when he died. It's hard to find out about horses from third-party sites because either they're promoting the horse or its get or they don't give a hoot. ;) White Arabian mare (talk) 01:07, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
Hello, White Arabian mare. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, The Case of the Hooking Bull, for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:

Created articles
[edit]Hi. I've noticed you've gone to a lot of trouble to create several articles. Unfortunately they mostly all have major issues that could eventually lead to deletion. I can't rewrite the articles for you, but if you would like any help or advice on sources don't hesitate to ask me on my talk page. [edit]Hello. You have a new message at Kudpung's talk page. 02:17, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
Any need for horse show articles?
[edit]Does anybody else see a need to have articles about some of the major equestrian competitions? I don't mean small shows, but the huge annual ones like the All American Quarter Horse Congress and the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. Surely they would pass notability, because so many people attend. At the TWHNC there are usually 2,000+ horses competing and an attendance of a quarter million people, and I think the Congress has far more. Some other notable shows are the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, and the AQHA World Championship Show-also the Devon show up on the East Coast (can't remember the right name of that one). Most of them have been held annually for over 50 years, and some are closer to being 100 years old. Anybody else think it's worth looking into?
[[1]] White Arabian mare (talk) 20:53, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
- I think it's an area that cold be worked on. We don't list any at Horse show - for obvious reasons (the list could grow to hundreds worldwide. Might be worth starting something similar to List of Rodeos and see how many redlinks there are - Besides the big international competitions (Olympics, World Cup, etc...) we do have some "big show articles, like Devon Horse Show, and some in Kentucky, but I don't think they are consistently categorized, we have Category:Equestrian sports competitions and Category:Equestrian sports competitions in the United States which probably has much of what there is. Congress and World, Scottsdale, the majors, yes. I would wait to do the TWHNC because that one is so controversial. But yes. Maybe the Congress/World could be started as a joint article, Scottsdale as a stand-alone. Open to the idea! Montanabw(talk) 07:07, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
Yes, I know that everybody who worked on the TWHNC thing would get a blue million nasty messages saying they supported horse abuse. :P I think there's abuse in EVERYTHING because there are stupid people in everything, but I don't believe the animal rights groups' agenda that every horse is sored, every barn is bad, every trainer is crooked, because they just use real cases of abuse to further their goals of animal liberation. There is soring is saddle seat, but there's also rollkur in dressage, tail deadening and draw reins in western pleasure, etc etc etc. But I will look into the world/congress thing and also Scottsdale. White Arabian mare (talk) 01:56, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
- Heh, (and hee, hee!) we have articles on rollkur, I personally added the material on tail deadening at tail (horse) and the peanut-rollers in western pleasure, we note genetic disorders in every breed where we can verify any, there are articles on draw reins, ring bits, gag bits, and I was on team that brought Horse Protection Act of 1970 to GA status! The beauty of a neutral point of view is that you can teach the controversies when we can source them. (I'm having trouble proving the tail-breaking they do to paso finos, knowing someone who owned one as a rescue is OR on my part, but it's a thing they have trouble with - the rulebook says its banned, maybe I could add that to the article... hmmm) But the TWH is unique in having a federal law involved. That said, if the current amendments to the HPA happen to sweep in the clown shoes they are now putting on Morgans, Saddlebreds and Arabians, I'm not going to be unhappy about it (Sorry, I'm ranting). Montanabw(talk) 01:53, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, I think the big lick will be gone within a couple of years and they will go back to keg shoeing. There is just too much opposition to it and too many hoops the trainers have to jump to show that way. I did make a sandbox and one of my projects there is the TWHNC but it'll be a long time before it's launched on public space. Personally, the only real horse abuse I ever saw was in 4-H where this girl had a Shetland in its 20s that had foundered. They had treated it to some extent but it wasn't sound. This girl, who was 11 and average size for her age (100 lbs) took the pony to the state show in 100 degree heat and show jumped and ran barrels on him. Too bad the HPA doesn't protect Shetlands. White Arabian mare (talk) 02:09, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
- Foundered ponies in back pastures all over the world would welcome people who'd put a few well-timed calls into the local sheriff's office. I think the UK now actually has a law that says letting ponies get grossly obese is abuse. But as for the show ring, I've seen very bad abuse in the Arabian industry; have witnessed trainers whip halter horses into a frenzy inside a box stall before taking them to a class - ordering the groom to put a sheet on the body "so there aren't any marks" - seeing young horses crouching and shaking in classes, utterly terrified. Watched a guy lose his cool with a young stallion and spur his sides bloody - with unroweled English spurs... and of course, just stuff like taking a Quarter Horse and loping them in circles for an hour in draw reins with their muzzle tucked down to their chest, or longing a horse for two hours to wear them down for a class. And that's just the stuff some people do in public. Behind the barn or back at the farm... Sad. At the rated shows, the stewards are more on top of things than they used to be, but it's the little unrated shows where people do the damnedest things. The last few years, I've gotten less afraid of being cussed at, so when I see something particularly problematic, I do speak up when I can. (Odd, they never thank me for it... :-P ) I want to tell these people, "it's just a horse show, get a grip..." I've judged a lot of 4-H, so often, it's not the kids, it's their parents... sigh. Montanabw(talk) 07:21, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, that girl's mom was the CLUB LEADER, who put the pony's problems down to its former "neglectful" owners (according to her, all 7 or 8 horses they had had been rescued from terrible owners). That was why I quit 4-H and have nothing to do with it now. That club was so ridiculous that no real trainers or instructors would work with them. But in our area, the so-called 'rescues' are crap too--can't ride or show any horse you adopt from them, so nobody adopts. White Arabian mare (talk) 15:51, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
- So often a concern. Truly, euthanasia is sometimes an appropriate option. I have a number of somewhat complex reasons I oppose horse slaughter - at least in the USA - but I do think that there is a place and time when some animals need to be put out of their misery. As for parents, I guess 4-H is no weirder than Little League or Cub Scouts -crazy parents who are trying to live through their kids are everywhere; I worked for an extension office for a while once, about 5% of the parents created 99% of the problems! Montanabw(talk) 19:39, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, too many people live vicariously through their children. Another issue we had with 4-H was that gaited breeds weren't recognized, and in my part of the country gaited horses are like half the equine population (stock horses are popular too and ponies to a lesser extent). So that kept out a lot of people right there, and there was also some dumb rule about anyone over age 13 couldn't ride a horse under 14.2 hands, which knocked me out (my horse is 13.3 but stout boned...mustang/Quarter horse). They were just loonies, but I got to train at a good barn and learned how to control a horse without beating it up or being mean. I'd probably still be there if the trainer hadn't retired. Bareback
[edit]Will get to your stuff in a bit, busy these last few days. Do need the URL for your sources, though... Montanabw(talk) 20:33, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
I actually used the sources you had attached to the sandbox. For the materials the pads are made out of, I used [2]. It's a sales site but the articles that tell you how to use the things don't tell you what they're made out of.White Arabian mare (talk) 20:39, 10 September 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- Right, but I need to know which bit came from which article - I can't just plop all the sources at the end of the paragraph; we have to do footnotes in the main article (if there aren't any now, there should be... sigh) If you can add a pinpoint cite to the specific page at the Jeffers site that describes the materials, we can use that - normally commercial sites should be avoided, but for this, I doubt we'd find anything else, so I think it is defensible. Overall, for sourcing, see WP:RS, WP:V and WP:CITE. I know that the footnoting is a pain in the ass (aka a "PITA" lol) but WP is getting more and more fussy about sourcing new content. If I have the time to do the sources, I will, but I've been super busy in RL lately... sigh... Montanabw(talk) 23:47, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
The stuff about the dangers of stirruped pads came from [[3]]. Most of the rest, especially the stuff about training riders through bareback, is from [[4]]. Yeah, I've been busy too lately. We'd been scouring the northern half of the state trying to find a livestock guardian dog puppy (nobody breeds them anymore), and somebody offered to give us as adult for free, but that means I have to clean up the pen that hasn't been used in a year (and has weeds 7 feet high). Plus, the new dog hasn't had shots, so we have to call the vet and make an appointment for that. And the farrier has been in the UK for a couple of months and as soon as he gets back I have to call him and get the horse's feet trimmed. It never ends! White Arabian mare (talk) 01:48, 11 September 2015 (UTC)
Just pop it in your draft at the article talk page. (use [single brackets for urls], double brackets are for wikilinks). True, it never ends! Montanabw(talk) 05:02, 11 September 2015 (UTC)
I added them in at the appropriate places. Today has been a nightmare. I have the Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone and it updated to Lollipop software a couple of weeks ago. I hate it now. It took away everything I liked and added a lot of crap I hate. Even stupider, nobody can reverse the update and give me back the phone I bought, not even the company that made the freaking thing. I will be buying Apple next time.White Arabian mare (talk) 21:52, 11 September 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- I still am using a "dumb phone" and a laptop; I will run them both as long as they function! LOL! Montanabw(talk) 04:13, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
Yes, ha ha, I did the same thing until my dumb phone croaked. I'm hoping the company will create a new update and revert this one, however, because they are getting almost 100% dislikes on it.White Arabian mare (talk) 16:28, 12 September 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare

The link is now correct. White Arabian mare (neigh) 21:59, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
Cute signature!
[edit]I like how you added "neigh" to your sig. And just a ping that on my RfA, you need to add a # sign in front of your !vote so the software counts it. I'll show you the formatting:
- First comment
- Second Comment
- and so on...
- But if you insert a space, the numbering restarts, so don't do that.
# And spaces in front make the formatting weird
There's more complicated syntax for threading discussions, but that should help you for now. Montanabw(talk) 20:59, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
I added the number sign--think I'm 64 to vote 'Support' on your RFA. Yeah, I had seen how others had changed their sigs to say 'discuss it' or something and thought Neigh would be a good one for me. :) White Arabian mare (Neigh) 21:07, 17 September 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- Thanks for the work you are doing; I've done some cleanup so you can see how the formatting stuff works. It's a steep learning curve around here, but keep at it, you're figuring it out! Montanabw(talk) 06:00, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
You're welcome. I enjoy the breed articles--horse, dog, rabbit, chicken, whatever. I've been working on some of the dog articles lately, mostly Maltipoo, so I joined WP:WikiProject Dogs. White Arabian mare (Neigh) 00:48, 20 September 2015 (UTC)
- Just a ping that we use Infobox named horse for all the non-racehorses (and Infobox racehorse for all kinds of racehorses, if they have a racing record to include) the sport horse one was designed for horses in the Olympics and international games only, but even so there's an informal consensus to not use it at all because it just duplicates the general one... glad you are using them, though, I really appreciate what you are doing. Montanabw(talk) 05:58, 20 September 2015 (UTC)
Ok, I will use the general one next time instead of the sport horse one. I couldn't find the template, so I lifted it from Stroller (horse) for Midnight Sun and Smart Little Lena. I figured that cutting and saddle seat should count as horse sports. ☺White Arabian mare (Neigh) 14:35, 20 September 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- Technically, yes, in one way, but the concept of a sport horse is a term of art to describe the hunter/jumper/dressage animals (it's a European concept, where there is less variety in disciplines, they pretty much have hacks, sport horses and race horses...). No worries, you are doing GREAT! Montanabw(talk) 21:37, 20 September 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, I'm trying to add good stuff people will want to know. I've never done much in the 'English horse' realm, besides go to a couple of hunter/jumper shows (saddle seat with gaited horses is about the most popular horse activity here, besides trail riding) and buy a Practical Horseman every now and then. ☺ When I was a kid and watching the Saddle Club all the time, I had some ambition to be a professional show jumper, but an old injury (not horse-related) ruined that one before it even got started. So I ride Western and bareback. White Arabian mare (Neigh) 21:46, 20 September 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- For me it was The Black Stallion books, I wanted to be a jockey. (My mom was 5'4" 110 lbs after Xmas dinner when I was a kid) But I figured by age 13 I was not going to have the right build for that! When I was in my training/lesson years, I briefly flirted with the possibility of training at the track, but stuff like being married and being a parent made that a bit impractical! Montanabw(talk) 00:53, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
Oh, I loved The Black Stallion too, but for some reason I never thought about being a jockey. Can't remember why, except maybe mom and dad tried to persuade me from it because of the danger. Then I saw my first saddle seat show and couldn't believe that had been out there the whole time without me being aware of it. So the next horse I get will probably be a flat-shod saddle seat/English pleasure horse that I hope to train myself in conjunction with a trainer (not doing the already broke horse thing again, last time it took 3 years of training out bad behavior that stemmed from a crappy first owner).White Arabian mare (Neigh) 01:08, 21 September 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- Yeah, it's a Catch-22, deal with the periodic idiocy of the youngster's brain or the neurosis of the ignorantly-managed horse. I've done both, the former is longer lasting if they don't scare you from riding in the process; the latter can bite you in the butt for a long time if you forget - I see too many "unbroke 10-year old mare (or worse yet, stallion) free to good home/makes nice babies" ads out there on Craigslist for my tastes... FWIW, I used to show my Arabs saddle seat and loved it, but then they changed the shoeing rules...they pulled and weighed a 45 ounce shoe off a park horse at Scottsdale a couple years ago and ruled it legal! :-O On an Arab! I just will not put "clown shoes" on my animals (for one thing, you have to keep them stalled all the time and that really sucks for them!) Montanabw(talk) 03:36, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
A present for you
[edit]Went to groom horses as a break from that RfA, and while at it, took photos of my bareback pad for the bareback riding article and maybe even a spinoff new article on bareback pads. (We have fly mask, bell boots and so on...). My 23-year old mare (with a touch of Cushing's and already getting hairy for winter! =:-O ) agreed to model. She was in a good mood, so I realized wiki also had no article for a grazing muzzle so I slapped that on her too and took some shots. More than you need, here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:ListFiles?limit=20&user=Montanabw&ilshowall=1 have fun! Montanabw(talk) 04:47, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! I inserted one of the pics and a short caption into the pads section at Bareback. (May go over and put in the saddle article too, it also has a section on bareback pads.) And on the AraAppaloosa pic, I was actually searching Commons for a Racking horse photo and decided to check out the category of 'mixed breed horses'. - Saw that, beautiful shot, too! Hooray! (Had wantd to get rid of that other image since forever, but was better than none at all...) One thing you as a new user can do is trot over to commons and surf images with fresh eyes... some of our older articles have images that are vintage 2006 and better stuff has been uploaded since. Can't go on a massive search and replace, but in some places (Like AraAppaloosa) there is definitely room for improvement! Montanabw(talk) 03:07, 22 September 2015 (UTC)
I found some better pictures for Quarter Horse too, will put them on the talk page first though for review. Finding pictures is a lot of fun--I found some better ones for Bluetick Coonhound and Redbone Coonhound as well.White Arabian mare (Neigh) 14:37, 22 September 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare

Flickr
[edit]Don't know if you will have any luck finding Racking horse images, but try Flickr... you'll initially go WHEEE! but then the balloon deflates because most of the images have a copyright on them. But if you search with the "creative commons - Commercial use and Mods allowed" filter, anything that's left (which might be crap) will be OK to upload to commons. If you find something and need advice, ping me! Montanabw(talk) 21:05, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
I looked and couldn't find anything not under copyright that actually appeared to be a real genuine Racking Horse. Found a lot of strange pictures though...I guess the system misread my search or thought I made a typo because it was bringing up Thoroughbreds on racetracks, Haflingers, everything else. I don't have any pictures to upload myself because the one and only Racking show I ever went to I didn't take even one. (I didn't have a good camera back then either though).White Arabian mare (Neigh) 22:12, 29 September 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- Don't feel bad, I've learned to keep my eyes open and my phone handy, even crap photos are better than none... for example, Lolo Pass (Idaho–Montana). I shouldn't mention that the images I contributed were taken through the windshield but at least I wasn't the driver ... =:-O Montanabw(talk) 03:50, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
A neat trick: nowiki tags
[edit]Hello, White Arabian mare, and thanks for your contributions at the Teahouse. I noticed that in this reply you made, you struggled to represent [[ ]] double brackets, using spaces between the brackets [ [ ] ] which may have been confusing to the person whose question you were answering.
In order to "escape" Wikipedia software's rendering of any Wikimarkup or html code you want to display, surround it with the nowiki tag, like so:
<nowiki>[[example]]</nowiki>. This would display as [[example]].
There's another trick that's useful for making clear to people seeking help which text it is they are meant to copy, which is achieved with the code tag. This renders the text in a monospaced font inside a grey box, like so: [[example]]
. I used <code>[[example]]</code> to get that effect.
The nowiki and code tags can be stacked, too. Just be sure you put the code tags on the outside, or else you will get <code>[[example]]</code> instead of [[example]]
!
I hope this has been helpful to you. See you around the Teahouse! —GrammarFascist contribstalk 01:57, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, GrammarFascist. I wasn't sure how to convey the idea without having it turn into a link or possibly even a picture. I will use the nowiki tags next time.☺I felt like I should answer the question though, since one of my favorite things to do is find photos to illustrate articles! accionvegana discussion
[edit]You posted I'm unsure about the dog articles (WikiProject Dogs seems pretty inactive) but on the horse breeds there is a formal consensus by WP:EQUINE on capitalization where it was agreed that all words within the breed name should be capitalized. (Horse, cattle, goat, and other livestock breeds that originate in the USA must be recognized by the USDA before they can be called 'true breeds' as such, which probably gives them more weight than pet animal breeds like dogs, which I don't think the USDA messes with, because hopefully nobody's eating or riding dogs.) I won't revert it to the capitalization, but it would be interesting if there was some kind of polling feature so we could find out whether people prefer it capitalized or uncapitalized.White Arabian mare (Neigh) 00:27, 4 October 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- I moved this discussion here because we just don't want to go there, the "capitalization wars" have been brutal and hard-fought. You are going to be poking a bear and the bear has a lot of friends, all of whom, if poked, insist that names are not capitalized. Best to just leave it alone. this was an example, it was a horrible experience for me and I don't ever want to go through it again. There was a similar fight over species names at the birds wikiproject and several very knowledgeable editors quit in disgust as a result. There's a big undercurrent of debate on the backside of wikipedia between people who know their subject and seek a local consensus on an issue, versus a group of I-don't-know-what-do-call-them people who want a very strict one size fits all standard to be used on WP (or, worse yet, to fight it out article by article the way they are doing with infoboxes). Some day the tide will turn, probably when the trolls grow up and move out of their mommy's basement and face the real world the rest of us live in. But I for one choose my battles, and I don't want to fight old ones. (I think the dog breeds had a long, nasty battle over the question, too.) Montanabw(talk) 19:41, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
Ok, I won't do anything about it now. Maybe later there will be a consensus reached without people killing each other, but for now I'll leave it alone. (I'm for using infoboxes too, by the way.) This is interesting, though, because for a while I've been wondering about when caps are correct in breed names. I use them in all words within the name, but evidently that's not accepted by the grammar and punctuation police.White Arabian mare (Neigh) 20:58, 4 October 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- There is more than one way to approach style, and basically there is a clash between those who understand a subject and those who apply generic rules to everything. The latter exist in greater numbers. (big sigh). See also WP:CHEESE. Montanabw(talk) 22:46, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
GA review on Beholder
[edit]Hi WAM, just a note to be nice to SchroCat, I specifically asked that editor to do the review and specifically because SchroCat is not a horse person. I wanted a solid reviewed with a lot of experience to look over the article and don't worry, I'm on top of it. (I'm a pretty big girl and have weathered a lot of these; I've got 46 GAs, and from them 20 FAs -- it's a tough gauntlet, but most reviewers have the best interest of the encyclopedia at heart. Montanabw(talk) 18:51, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
Ok, I didn't say anything mean; (I try not to, ever) but I did add a comma that SchroCat said was needed, and explained that the breed name should be capitalized. I thought it'd be silly if you didn't get it to GA just because a comma was missing...☺White Arabian mare (Neigh) 19:30, 6 October 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- Heh, thanks for your defense! It is nice to have help, but SchroCat is one of the good eggs - and GAN reviewers are supposed to criticize! You want to see a nasty GA review, the one for Kerry Bog Pony was a bear! (And that editor is now blocked anyway). Montanabw(talk) 23:06, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
Ha, I can see why!White Arabian mare (Neigh) 23:35, 6 October 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- Be really careful with the re-capitalization stuff, some of these articles were changed after a hot dispute of one sort or another. Best to check history and talk pages before making dramatic changes to be sure you aren't stepping into a hornet's nest (M/mustang in particular was a nasty fight where I held out for capitalization - and lost - with an agreement all around that no one was going to revisit the issue for a long time... so best not mess with that article at all!) BTW, you are doing some good work on the gaited horse articles, but be sure to check if articles are GA (green circle with a plus up in the right-hand corner) or FA (gold star) before editing - maybe propose changes on talk page on those first. Montanabw(talk) 16:54, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
Ok. On the SSH article I didn't find anything onthe talk page to suggest that it was caught up in the cap wars, and the upper case seemed more appropriate since "Spotted Saddle" just doesn't cut it as a breed name. 😏 (Also, Tennessee Walking Horse uses the capping for all three words, and they're very similar/double registered a lot of times. In fact, I've seen ads for a stallion close to me who is triple-registered as a Tennessee Walker, SSH, and Racking Horse--wonder what the owners say when people ask what breed he is? Ha) White Arabian mare (Neigh) 18:10, 7 October 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- I agree, hence I left it be! ;-) Your logic is correct... a "spotted saddle" is, in my book, a saddle badly in need of cleaning! Montanabw(talk) 20:22, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
A cup of tea for you!
[edit]Thanks very much for your message, if there's anything you can do to help. Please do, as I don't know wikipedia too well yet and worry I've not done enough. Citation formatting
[edit]Hey WAM, if you are going to use cite web, use the entire parameter, not just part of it. Either just use text and links between ref tags or use the template with proper syntax Template:Cite_web or just see how I did corrections. Another option is to just put the raw URL in between ref tags and then use refill to put in all the fancy stuff ( refill is here). Montanabw(talk) 23:32, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
Ok. I just realized the other day that there's a cite button on the desktop site; it's not there on mobile! If I'm in a hurry I typically use the raw url though, and put the details in later. I have a little notebook I write down web addresses and stuff in so it's still there. White Arabian mare (Neigh) 01:04, 15 October 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- Yeah, the raw URL between ref tags is best when in a rush. If I'm too rushed to use the templates, I'll do the raw url and then run refill, manually filling in (later) the ones that refill won't parse. Montanabw(talk) 17:00, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
- On another note, you can usually get away with ONE "fair use" image on an article if you are willing to take the time to do a fair use rationale when the image is uploaded. (Examples, Bask, Go Man Go, Indraff, etc...) Fair use is not a free license, but where the image is of a deceased person or animal and thus no free images could be obtained, we can use these. But having the fair use rationale at the image page - and having it stay local on en.wiki (not commons) is crucial. Montanabw(talk) 17:00, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
I put up a request pictures tag for Black Allan; I didn't have any luck finding out if the photos I found of him on Google are free license and I don't know how to upload from Google images anyway. (I know how to upload from my own pictures, just not from Google pictures). Anyway, thanks. White Arabian mare (Neigh) 17:47, 15 October 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare

Page patrolling
[edit]Hi White Arabian mare. I came across the newly created article Divine wine nepal and saw that you had marked it as reviewed. Was that a mistake? The article is in dreadful shape and doesn't seem to be about a notable business. gobonobo + c 20:09, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
No, Gobonobo, it wasn't a mistake. I sent the creator a message telling them that they have to either improve it drastically very soon, or I'll mark it for speedy deletion. Since they are a first-time contributor, I decided to let them have a day or so to improve it if they can. If they can't it'll have to go. ADD: I nominated it for deletion. It just doesn't meet requirements, and no sources at all. The deletion discussion should be live. White Arabian mare (Neigh) 20:32, 15 October 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare

Page Patrolling
[edit]@White Arabian mare: I received a notice that you patrolled my page. What can I do in order to improve it? I read through the guidelines and WP:NOTTWITTER, and added a section =The Serious Stuffs=. It is okay for now? Frank (User Page) (talk) 01:45, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
@Imfrankliu, patrolling just means that I looked your page over and decided that it didn't contain any inappropriate content, like porn or attacks on other users. It's fine. Userpage guidelines are a lot looser than article guidelines, but there are some things that are not allowed, including those I mentioned above and other stuff like promotional pushes for yourself or your company or whatever. Yours doesn't violate any guidelines that I know of. All new pages have to be patrolled, and in many cases it's just a formality. ☺White Arabian mare (Neigh) 02:05, 22 October 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare

Anybody can, yes. There are admins talking about making a rule to stop anyone with less than 500 edits and 4 months as a registered user from patrolling, but as of now there's no rule. I don't have 4 months of editing (I've been here 2 1/2) but I have around 1500 edits. Generally new page patrollers just have to use common sense. Copyright?
[edit]Hi White Arabian mare,
I really don't know whether it should be there - it is an extract from McPherson's Ossian, so out of copyright. Should it?
Le Sanglier des Ardennes (talk) 00:17, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Le Sanglier des Ardennes Yes, in that case it should be fine. I just wasn't sure what work it came from (thought it looked pre-1900s though), so I thought it was best to check. If not under copyright it should be totally OK though--I know that on some of the article pages they have very long extracts from books or songs that are in the public domain (This Land is Your Land being an famous example where the entire text of the song is contained in the article), and nobody has a problem with them. 😊 White Arabian mare (Neigh) 01:57, 26 October 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
Bleech
[edit]That "NorthAmerican Sportpony" thing drives me crazy too, but that is what they insist on calling them (I guess the organizers are a bunch of German wannabees... see German Riding Pony or "reitpony") anyway, I moved it, but couldn't do the NorthAmerican as one word, so checking to see if you'd be OK if I put in a RM to get it done. Such a stupid name, but I think that we have to stick with it. I also tossed even more Magic unicorn promotional tone. (Sheesh!) Montanabw(talk) 23:26, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
I really don't care if you do an RM. Yeah, I've been toning down the promotional tone some, and plan to do more. I had never heard of them before the article came up as one recommended for me by SuggestBot. Then again, I have very long legs, so riding ponies is pretty much out, and I haven't read as much about them as about horses... I rode a Shetland at a county fair or something when I was 7 and was too big for it even then, so I've tried to stay away from the ponies pretty much! White Arabian mare (Neigh) 01:41, 27 October 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- What gives me the giggles are the half-Arabs (and even a few Raffles-bred purebreds) that compete as "show ponies" in the H/J world. My youth horse was a 14.1 half-Arab, a granddaughter of Witez II. They are powerhouses! Montanabw(talk) 22:13, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
- Oh, and for one of your other articles, a good RS article: http://www.thehorse.com/articles/36569/the-frustrations-of-white-line-disease .Montanabw(talk) 22:13, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the source! I've seen half-Arabians as hunter ponies too (very cute ones). I once even knew somebody who had a Tennessee Walker that trotted, so she showed him hunter under saddle in open shows (I don't know if he just refused to gait or if he could gait and trot too and they trained him to do one or the other) but he was an extremely good horse and beat Thoroughbreds! White Arabian mare (Neigh) 23:06, 27 October 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- My dad owned a partbred Walker when I was a kid, she would both trot and do a running walk. Montanabw(talk) 22:26, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
- And while editing Roan Allen earlier, I found out that he could do 7 distinct gaits on command, and was shown five-gaited against Saddlebreds, as a flat walk/running walk horse against other Walkers, and as a trotting horse in harness. White Arabian mare (Neigh) 23:25, 28 October 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare
- But isn't the running walk technically one of the acceptable "slow gaits" for 5-gaited? (Along with the stepping pace and the "singlefoot") Montanabw(talk) 01:15, 29 October 2015 (UTC)
I'm not sure, it seems like the Saddlebreds on YouTube are not shaking their heads at the slow gait? I was reading something the other day that was talking about how most of the gaited breeds don't do the original gaits they were bred for--which I noticed from seeing videos of Midnight Sun and Merry Go Boy. They were waaay faster than the flat-shod or "natural" Walkers today are, and they had a bigger head nod. The breeding away from the head nod thing may come from the misconception that a head nod means the horse is sored, I don't know, or it could just be that they're selecting too much for the pretty palominos and buckskins and not enough for the gait. I did see an excellent YouTube video a couple of years ago about how to teach a Saddlebred to rack using nothing but regular rubber hoof boots, but naturally I've never been able to find it again! I've helped with some Montana ones, if you want some examples (so-so examples, no GA/FA- class ones yet) I did Doncaster Round Barn (my photos too!) and Temple Emanu-El (Helena, Montana). About your siggy ...
[edit]Hi White Arabian mare, I just wanted to let you know that you do not have to type out your username after the four tildes when you sign postings. The four tildes create your username and the link to your userpage (and the date, etc.) when you type them. Retyping your unlinked username as a repetition of it is therefore redundant. It's also rather confusing, as it looks like a typo or a rookie mistake (not to mention the fact that there's no spacing), and it is additionally confusing to newcomers since it is not clickable. Anyway, I hope you don't mind this well-intentioned comment! Cheers, Softlavender (talk) 05:38, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks for creating Grand National and World Championship Morgan Horse Show, White Arabian mare!
Wikipedia editor JQTriple7 just reviewed your page, and wrote this note for you:
Thank you for your article. It seems well written and has good sourcing. Allow me to suggest an infobox, or perhaps splitting it up into sections. Again, thanks for a nice article.

Just to let everybody know
[edit]I am having serious issues editing. Last night I couldn't access my account because the computer kept telling me my password was wrong. I had to create this alt account on Wiktionary just to get on here, but I don't want to edit off it. I will probably not be editing unless I can crack my password on my original account. I don't have email and I don't think it's possible for me to get it, due to some family issues and other past problems with hacking. I probably can't even have free web mail. I am very, very upset over this. I may be able to set up another account under a similar name and redirect or move this page and my userpage. I appreciate your understanding. Thanks to everybody and goodbye, hopefully not for long. White Arabian mare alt (talk) 13:44, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
- Hugs, WAM! Hope you get it sorted soon. You may want to try Help:Reset password, as you probably had to have some sort of email address to create your account in the first place...? If you do have to create a new account, You might want to do something like User:Puppy of Dog The Teddy Bear, whose user page tells the story. (Sadly that user has retired completely from editing wikipedia, he was a very good contributor). You can go in under your new account and edit this page to redirect there if you want. Also, if you can't resurrect this page and have to create a new account, read [Wikipedia:SOCKLEGIT]] to see how to indicate that this page is now a compromised account and that you won't be using it any more. Thanks for the support, at the Teahouse they told me that if I get a new account I can simply do a move on this, my sandbox and my userpage and use them for the new account, although I'd probably have to put a note on the userpage explaining it. Btw, the new account will probably be WhiteArabianMare, White Arabian Filly, Crystal Mare, etc...something very similar to what I had. I'll post it on your talk page. I haven't had email in about 4 years...it got hacked and was so slow that it took literally 15 or 20 minutes to send a simple one paragraph email with no attachments, so we got rid of it. I didn't have to give anything except a username and password to get the account, which surprised me at the time. Everybody wants your email! - Sorry this has happened to you. I hope you can find another user name that you feel comfortable with. BTW, I liked the multi-tab layout of your user page so much that I have copied it onto my own - very nice! --Gronk Oz (talk) 02:35, 12 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, Gronk Oz I got it from Montanabw's userpage. I liked it because it was simple snd easy to use. White Arabian mare alt (talk) 02:56, 12 November 2015 (UTC)
Sorry for your troubles
[edit]Doggies promote Wikilove and hopefully this one has made your day much better.
Spread WikiLove by placing a doggy on other user's talk pages by adding {{subst:Doggy}} to their talk page.
Happy editing!
- No horses in WikiLove but I see from your page that you have dogs. Hope this will help. See you soon.

Thanks, Fylbecatulous. I'm hoping to set up a new account later today if I can't crack my password. White Arabian mare alt (talk) 14:24, 12 November 2015 (UTC)

[edit]Howdee hey! Hope all is well on your end. I just ran across Smart Little Lena and the cn tag is still attached dating back to Aug 2015. Just curious... why didn't you cite sources when you created the article? Were they questionable? Atsme📞📧 21:13, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
