Why he Wikipediates

[edit]

Growing up as the child of two English teachers had the effect of making JustDerek a persnickety copy editor. As a genealogist, the standard of proof required for publication in that field impressed upon him the crucial importance of accurate source citation and verifiability of reference materials.

The recent rise of social networking has, in JustDerek's opinion, led to an increasing number of people creating articles on themselves or their own projects or causes — presumably viewing Wikipedia as simply another web megaphone with which they may promote themselves, as they do on Facebook or Twitter. This trend has led JustDerek to keep handy for cutting-and-pasting purposes a few polite, pre-written discussion page messages about the Notability and What Wikipedia is Not policies.
