Did you know that in 2023, over $575 billion worth of merchandise was sold through Amazon, with more than 60% driven by third-party sellers? Beyond e-commerce giants like Amazon, Temu, Wish, and AliExpress, similar questions of accountability arise for meal delivery platforms such as Grubhub and Just Eat, and ride-hailing platforms like Uber and Lyft. This raises crucial questions: ▪️ Who is responsible for the quality and legality of products or services offered on these platforms? ▪️ Are platforms liable for faulty goods, counterfeit products, or poor service, or are they exempt as intermediaries? ▪️ Where do consumers seek legal redress, and which governments provide oversight? These issues were at the heart of a dynamic conversation between Professor Christopher Tang, faculty director of UCLA Anderson Center For Global Management, and Professor Michael Dorff executive director of University of California, Los Angeles - School of Law’s Lowell Milken Institute for Business Law and Policy. Together, they unpacked the intersection of business, law, and technology at the latest Global Business and Policy Forum. This forum highlights the complexities of consumer protection, product liability, and the responsibilities of e-commerce and social media platforms in today’s interconnected economy.
