40 years ago, two Stanford computer scientists had a simple idea that changed the world: connecting different networks together. That vision became Cisco, and it helped create the Internet. What's remarkable about this story isn't just the technical achievement - it's how a fundamental belief in connecting people and possibilities has shaped the entire technology industry. While the scale has magnified dramatically since the original problem from 1984, the core mission of connecting what's possible remains as vital as ever. Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of this journey has been seeing how democratized connectivity has transformed society. From enabling remote education during global challenges to powering hybrid work revolutions, connectivity infrastructure has consistently expanded opportunity and access. Looking ahead to the next 40 years, the technology industry stands at another pivotal moment. As AI reshapes every aspect of how we work and live, the need for securely connecting humans-agents-avatars-robotics has never been more critical.
