POINT TAKEN

Although generative AI is the newer advancement and AI (the general tech) has been talked about for years, AI is being covered at a much higher clip. According to our analysis, The Wall Street Journal has written 1,944 pieces on AI YTD (up from 906 last year). Only 27% (533) are about generative AI.

Using the website's search functionality, we analyzed WSJ coverage of AI vs. generative AI, for 2023.

NEWS THAT IMPACTS PR STRATEGY

AI claims in check. New data showed that while almost 40% of companies in the blue-chip S&P 500 index mentioned AI in earnings calls last quarter, only 16% actually wrote it into their filings. Companies are realizing they must be careful what they claim. P.S. we wrote about this not long ago.

Big tech sucking the air out of the room. Coverage abounds for tech giants, from "Microsoft's Satya Nadella is winning big tech's AI war" to "Nvidia riding high on explosive growth in AI." Big, public companies always command a lot of the news agenda, so (aside from pitching financial events, which are still often competitive to place) startups have to work harder to build a story and assets that put them in the conversation. Here's a great example: A Startup in the New Jersey Suburbs Is Battling the Giants of Silicon Valley.
