Authentic Leadership
Reflecting on the current leadership challenges we have been faced with over the past few months I have realised how incredibly important authenticity is. We tend to look for genuine, trustworthy leaders and role models we can relate to. This made me realise that the picture-perfect headshot that represents the “corporate image” of who I am – is not who I am. It is merely a picture-perfect moment; it does not capture the truth behind the person. It does not explain the grit, determination, and daily re-commitment to being a leader of worth. It does not unpack the path that got you to the picture-perfect moment or the “shitstorm” that took place 5 minutes before the photo opportunity.
Unpacking the realities of life that shape the person (in my case; divorce, single parenting, retrenchment, starting a business and cancer, to name a few) starts giving us insight into who the person is and what sacrifices was needed; and believe me – there is always sacrifices. If you choose one thing you are going to lose out on something else; but you can own it, if you own the sacrifice – it does not control you. Furthermore, it is not difficult to sacrifice if you see the significance of it.
Leaders take responsibility, irrespective of circumstances. It is a privilege to be a leader, although I would be lying if I don’t acknowledge that leadership is hard. How much do I share to be honest and authentic (relatable) without people losing respect? For me, the choice to share the leadership load vs carry it is the discernment that is required to be an authentic, relatable leader that your team can respect.
