8 Tips If Your Job Was Eliminated or You Were Laid Off

8 Tips If Your Job Was Eliminated or You Were Laid Off

First of all, don't panic!!

  1. Check on Severance Pay - Severance pay/benefits may be given to employees upon termination of employment.
  2. Collect Your Final Paycheck- Make sure that, before you leave your job, you know when you are receiving your last paycheck, and how it will be delivered to you. In some states, employers are required to pay it immediately. You may be entitled to accrued vacation, sick leave, overtime when you lose your job. Be sure to speak to HR to learn what is owed.
  3. Check on Eligibility for Employee Benefits- When you are fired or laid off some of the benefits you had while on the job might continue for a certain period of time. Typically, until end of the month.
  4. Review Health Insurance (COBRA) Options- Continuing health insurance coverage, is important. COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) helps those who lose their health benefits the option to continue group health benefits for limited periods of time.
  5. Find Out About Your Pension Plan / 401(k)- You might be able to transfer the value into another plan or get a lump sum distribution of your retirement money when you leave the company.
  6. File for Unemployment - If you have been laid off from your job through no fault of your own, you should be eligible for unemployment benefits. You can register for unemployment online.
  7. Get References and Recommendations on LinkedIn- This will be invaluable when you start searching for your next job when asked why you left your last position. Having a reference or recommendation from your former boss, manager or colleagues will show that you are a good employee.
  8. Start a Job Search and Prepare to Interview- Write down the duties of your last position and update your resume. It’s a great idea to hire a Professional Resume Writer/Career Coach to make sure your resume is in the most current format and you can get through the automated HR/Applicant Tracking Systems. Also, a coach can help guide you through the job search process! This will trim your time off considerably.
