I recently had the incredible opportunity to travel to India, and I am still buzzing with inspiration from what I witnessed there. Among the many impactful initiatives I encountered, one stood out profoundly—the work of the Mann Deshi Foundation. Witnessing firsthand their dedication to empowering women and fostering inclusion left an indelible mark on me. On this International Women's Day, with this year's theme being "Inspire Inclusion," I can't help but reflect on the powerful ways organizations like Mann Deshi are making a difference. From providing access to financial services to offering skill-building programs, they are breaking barriers and creating pathways for women from all walks of life. The spirit of inclusion I experienced in India reminded me of the importance of championing diversity and ensuring that everyone has a seat at the table. It's not just about opening doors; it's about actively inviting and empowering individuals to thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances. Unnati is thrilled to welcome its new senior leader to the team, Upasana Saha, Senior Programme Manager. Upasana will be taking Unnati's partnerships and programmes to the next level in Mumbai and Pune both. With over 11 years of experience in the social impact space working across India, and a MA in Human Rights and a BA in Political Science from Presidency College, Calcutta University, Upasana brings significant experience in women's empowerment to further the Lodha Foundation's goals. Read on to get to know Upasana and her vision! Q: What are the top three things that motivate you to work in women's empowerment? A: I am convinced that educating one woman in a community or family will inevitably lift up the entire community or family, breaking the cycle of poverty and gender inequity. An investment in women is an investment for all. The current global labor force participation rate for women is under 47%—25 percentage points lower than it is for men. Research shows that increased participation of women in the labor force, in parliaments, and in public decision making has overwhelming benefits for countries’ GDP and growth towards a more equitable and inclusive future. Therefore, working with women is critical to the overall growth any nation. While important strides have been made in recent years toward greater gender equality, women continue to face significant barriers to equal participation in the economy with men. Women who are economically empowered make greater contributions to their families and societies, particularly their children, paving the way for long-term development. Q: What is something you hope to bring to Unnati - the team, the program, the work, and more? A: I hope to learn, co-create, and scale the incredible work the Lodha Foundation is already doing to increase women's participation in India's formal workforce. I will facilitate expanding a gender responsive upskilling program for women in collaboration with like-minded thought partners, colleges, and NGOs serving the dynamic needs of women from diverse backgrounds in Maharashtra and other priority geographies of the Lodha Foundation. Q: What is something you care about learning through your new role? A: I am interested in learning about existing program models that promote gender transformative job readiness support for women, as well as their best practices, gaps, and opportunities for collaboration with a last-mile approach: 1) adopting an intersectional approach and technically preparing young women with advanced 21st century employability and communication skills to become aspiring future leaders and contributors to national economic growth 2) understanding the formal work space landscape—hiring practices, policies in place, and opportunities for more skilled women to step in; and 3) sharing our findings with the ecosystem to amp up this work on multiple levels. 

As we celebrate International Women's Day today, it serves as a poignant reminder that investing in skills is essential for fostering equality in the workplace. At Hero Vired, we firmly believe in creating an environment where talent knows no boundaries. I'm happy to share that 50% of our senior leadership and 30% of our entire workforce are women. Yet, we recognize that there's still much work to be done. Our recent survey provided valuable insights into the changing dynamics of the workplace for women in India, with a specific focus on the importance of upskilling. The findings highlight the pivotal role of upskilling in empowering women to capitalize on new opportunities. Remarkably, 85% of respondents acknowledged its significance, with 65% expressing a strong inclination towards upskilling to advance in their careers and thrive in an ever-evolving job ecosystem. It's evident that investing in skills is not just a pathway to personal growth for women, but also essential for fostering a healthy and inclusive work culture. At a time when even the Olympics is touching gender parity on the field of play, I cannot help but think how much longer it takes before we can say the same about the various professional sectors in India. Our field of play – especially the manufacturing sector - employs women in single digit and low double-digit percentage in the shopfloor. There are efforts in the right direction today, but the pace is still slow. Continental ‘s Women for Manufacturing CSR Program aims at bridging this divide – through awareness, training, certification, mentoring, grooming & placement support. The program has been running successfully since 2021, and over 2000 women across India have been touched by the program. Their stories are inspirational. They tell us not just about how earning capacity has made them financially independent, but also about how their standing in the family has changed. How they have started gaining a new and different kind of respect in their social circle.
