As the hustle and bustle of work life slows down for the year, our attention is shifting towards the festive period and the pending new year. I have decided to reflect on 2024 and celebrate all that this year gave me—the good, the bad, and the ugly. I have also chosen to self-reflect on my leadership style, how that has manifested in 2024 and where I want to operate in 2025. So, as I embark on my reflections, I have chosen to share some of my interviews, thoughts and posts as we count down 2024. Have a listen to this interview, where I spoke about leading with a servant's heart - https://lnkd.in/eTtg7vmW #leadership #leaders #charityceo

"Take a 5-minute smile break and then get back to work." That's what I heard a CEO say, and even though it was said in a light hearted way, it can take on a different meaning than intended when said by the company's top executive. While this column by Rachel Feintzeig in The Wall Street Journal is more about the pressure professionals place on themselves, I can't help but wonder what that stems from? CEOs and #CSuite leaders set the tone and culture for their organizations, so is the inability for some to sustain the feeling they derive from big wins and achievements somehow tied to organizational culture? 👉 "You're only as good as your last game." 👉 "What have you done for us lately?" We say or hear those often in work and life, but do they take on different meanings depending on who says them? And when? 💡 What can we do when we're the one's putting that pressure on ourselves? I don't have the answers, but there are a few sturdy pointers in this piece. For me, it's important to be #selfaware when we start feeling a lull, and give ourselves some #grace - knowing that the highs we feel when achieving a big win are not sustainable. And, get comfortable with #failing, it'll happen more frequently than the successes. If you'd like to read Rachel's column but don't have a WSJ subscription, message me. I can unlock it for you. I attended a musical concert recently at my daughter's school. Once of the things I noticed during the concert was that after every band finished their performance, the conductors (the one who directs the orchestra/band) acknowledged the audience's applause, stepped aside and directed all the applause towards their team. I think this is a wonderful analogy for leadership. Here's how: - Each member of the band has a role to play. The conductor acts as a leader of the group, prompting/directing each part of the team to play their piece and leveraging their capabilities. - The conductor does not play the music for the team. Their role is that of a guide, trusting their team member's skills to perform and directing them accordingly. This is like setting goals for team members which align with the team's objectives, and giving them the space to work on their tasks. - This ensures collaboration of people with diverse skills. The synergy results in a beautiful performance which creates an enjoyable experience for the audience. - After the performance, the leader gives credit where it is due, letting their team enjoy the applause for their performance. What all of this results is a high performing team that adds immense value to all involved- their people as well as their stakeholders (in this case, the audience). How do you resonate with this analogy? What parts of this do you see playing out in your environment? #leadership #highperformingteam #people #leaders #sharingcredit #appreciation #collaboration #stakeholders #diversity #synergies #goals

There is no shortage of interest groups, social groups, and clubs where you could try out public speaking. You can even consider community theatre, since acting some parts involves long soliloquies. That being said, if available where you are, it is preferable to consider a Toastmasters club. Toastmasters is a programme specifically geared towards developing the skills of rhetoric and exercising it as a form of leadership. You can even visit the clubs before considering membership. You will among people undertaking the same journey of becoming better speakers, so it is a shared struggle and a shred triumph. There are clubs that meet physically, and clubs that meet virtually, so you have options. Terence Nunis, DTM Terence K. J. Nunis, Consultant President, The Collide Toastmasters Past President, AIA Toastmasters Club
Where else can you try out public speaking other than your own home? I can't find a place to practice without embarrassment.
