Decarbonising Industrial Heating Skyven Technologies is a company which has just been awarded a huge (up to US$145 million, exact amount to be negotiated) demonstration grant by the US DOE to reduce industrial emissions. It is an example of how low grade waste heat from industrial processes can be upgraded using heat pumps to useful industrial heat. Electrification of industrial heating is more efficient than burning fossil fuels for heat. This has wide application in the entire manufacturing sector, esp on Jurong Island. In fact, the waste heat from data centres can be upgraded to industrial heating using heat pumps so that it is useful for industries like food processing. It's really just a matter of how we design our industrial/business parks to promote circularity. Instead of wasting precious energy trying to cool data centres, why not use the waste heat for an industrial process next door? Extract below are specs for the Arcturus heat pump from the Skyven website: "Highest Temperature Lift - Upgrades low temperature heat to as high as 420°F (215°C) with a max lift of 330°F (166°C)" https://lnkd.in/g9wes3Ue Bottom line: you don't have to burn fossil fuels to produce industrial heat. Electrification can take care of most needs. Heat pumps can take care of the lower grade heat required. Very high grade heat can be provided by electric arc furnaces, plasma torches etc. Of course, electrification of industrial processes means the burden of decarbonisation is transferred to the power sector. That's another (non-trivial) problem to solve. But overall emissions will be lowered.
