Clearing power lines is a delicate job, as technician Karim Demnati tells us in this fourth episode.      All the high-voltage cables that came down have to be lifted back up. It is quite a job, with our colleagues pulling out all the stops to do it as quickly and cleanly as possible. With respect for the houses and precision in the approach, most of the pylons are cleared smoothly. #GuardiansoftheGrid

  • Episode 3 covers the activities of Elia’s task force and their preparatory work for the complex clean-up operation.

As you know, our series ‘Guardians of the Grid’ tells the story of the tropical storm that hit Leest.   In episode 3, we survey the damage.   The full aftermath of the storm cannot be assessed in the first few days. Gradually, the impact on residents, businesses, and Elia becomes clear. And as is always the case with damage, solutions take time. Fortunately, we can count on the expertise of our colleagues. With several crisis meetings, we quickly gain insight into the location of the various damage cases and what solutions are needed.

  • Last summer, a tropical storm destroyed 9 pylons in Leest. David Dehenauw, head of the weather forecasting department at the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMI), explains how exceptional such a fall wind is and why it had such a disastrous impact on Leest.   Nine pylons were unable to withstand the wind. After the storm, our experts put all the pieces of the puzzle together to understand why so many pylons were blown over. Where did the wind come from, what type of wind were we dealing with, how did the pylons fall, and what can we learn from this to be more resilient against future storms? • With the end of the year in sight, we look back at the storm that struck Leest earlier this year. Over five episodes, our series ‘Guardians of the Grid’ tells the story of the tropical storm that hit Leest.       From a glorious summer day to great panic in Stad Mechelen, Episode 1 shows how gusts from a tropical storm toppled nine high-voltage poles. We take you back in time, back to Leest, and to our colleagues who immediately rolled up their sleeves to help the affected families and turn the electricity supply back on.
