New work: Grosvenor Place Installation The iconic Grosvenor Place building in Sydney was designed in the early eighties by Australia’s king of towers Harry Seidler. An architect ahead of his time Seidler believed whole-heartedly in the importance of art and frequently collaborated with visual artists in the design of his buildings. He often said that ‘art adds a sense of identity’ and over the course of his career Seidler worked with such luminaries as Alexander Calder, Le Corbusier and Sol LeWitt just to name a few. For the Grosvenor Place building Seidler commissioned visionary New York artist Frank Stella to create a series of works to adorn the building’s enormous lobby. The three reliefs, from the artist’s ‘Cones and Pillars’ series, are monumental in scale towering over the entrance of the building to this day. Since its opening in the mid-eighties Grosvenor Place has continually evolved and these days boasts a sophisticated business lounge rivalling anything in Sydney and a jam-packed calendar of events designed to keep the building’s community activated throughout the year. With the introduction of a new digital screen to the building’s grand lobby End of Work were engaged to deliver a suite of ultra-high resolution digital artworks that would run on the screen. Frank Stella’s artworks sit amongst the world’s best collections, including the Guggenheim and MoMA in New York and London’s Tate Modern. Rather than try and compete with such commanding pieces we opted to augment them. Reimagining his exuberant forms as three dimensional elements floating in space and finished with Stella’s own brushstrokes and textures which were taken from the adjacent artworks. How confident do people feel to visit the spaces you create? We're all aware of the positive impact that inclusive spatial design has on businesses, but do we think about how we remove the barriers to access that space in the first place? Earlier in year I spoke with Richmal (Richie) M. who I met at a Mix Interiors Round Table last October hosted by Tarkett about our website plans for Natural Colour Works. She told me that one of key things that can create a barrier for a neurodivergent person is the unexpected. Small businesses don't have the luxury of an DEI department, but there are simple things that you can do to help try and mitigate this anxiety. On our Contacts page, I've written a short description of how to prepare for your appointment - what to expect when you come through the door in terms of stylists' welcome and noise levels - that we have complimentary tea, coffee and water but you can bring your own - that we have free WIFI and we're happy for you to work - and then that really awkward bit, tipping, are we expecting it (no) - that we love being tagged in social! Then the real gem that Richie suggested (and I have been told this has been really well received), a live walking video from Liverpool Street Station to the salon. I'll be making more of these from our other walkable stations Shoreditch and Aldgate East.
