Mini Crash Course about Prion Proteins 🧠 Prion proteins are fascinating molecules found in our nervous system. Unlike most proteins, they can exist in two different conformations: a normal, functional form (PrPC) and a misfolded, disease-causing form (PrPSc). When PrPC misfolds into PrPSc, it triggers a chain reaction, causing other PrPC molecules to also misfold. This accumulation of misfolded prions leads to neurodegenerative diseases like Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD).
