There are some smart people in this space that not only fully subscribe to the conflict between our world's burgeoning energy appetite and its adverse impacts; but can assess the big picture holistically, and begin to reframe the narrative with both their actions and data... Clean energy advocates - of which, I'm one; when the dollars make sense (no pun intended 😜) - usually shudder at the prospects of expanding the footprint of an industry that's been historically cavalier about their fugitive methane emissions (a particularly insidious GHG) globally. But as the efforts of EQT have already demonstrated (by achieving net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions across the entirety of their operations several months ahead of schedule): this "dismissiveness" is changing... I believe that Toby Z. Rice's appraisal has merit: the US yields the cleanest, most sustainable natural gas! And "A Pragmatist's Guide to Energizing the USA" clearly enumerates on how our domestic machinations have already placed the US in pole position to be a global leader of LNG at scale. Proactively supplying this LNG to international, coal-fired facilities would (in many cases) provide the quickest, and most cost-effective means to decarbonize the worldwide power grid, AND strengthen American trade!

One of the most impactful bits from this panel was when Luke Metzger said [paraphrasing] "that the future of clean energy in the world relies on Texas". We have the workforce talent, the available capital, a growing equipment manufacturing industry, complimentary sun and wind resources that are the envy of America, and space to build. The only thing preventing Texas from decarbonizing, and then exporting clean energy to the rest of North America, is us and the policies our leaders enact. I am looking forward to advocating for good renewable energy policy in the 2025 Texas legislative session.

The reality is that replacing foreign coal with U.S. LNG leads to lifecycle emissions reductions, all while ensuring energy security for our allies. A recent ICF study found that without U.S. LNG exports abroad, global GHG emissions would have increased in 2022 by over 112 million metric tons. In Fairhaven, winter demand surges as residents rely on electric heating, creating peak loads that risk overloading the system.
