It's high time for us as HR practitioners to intensify our advocacy for workforce motivation for higher productivity. While this may lead to higher operational cost, there are seemingly insignificant but simple, yet effective and productive ways to increase motivation and productivity with little or no financial cost, which is job classification or job titling. Assigning a moral boosting title to the job that accurately reflects its role, responsibilities, and level within the organization is a way to strategically motivate job holders When naming job positions in a workplace, it's important to use clear and respectful language. Instead of "cleaners", use "Custodians", "Facilities Assistants", or "Maintenance Staff". Instead of "Janitor", Facilities Technician, or Building Maintenance Technician, are good alternatives Gateman can be called "safety manager" and instead of "Attendant", use "Customer Service Representative" or "Support Staff". Doing this is a way of showing respect for employees' skills and contributions to the growth of the organization. See beyond what is written and learn beyond what is taught. Keep adding value, there is always a better you.

During my time working all over Australia, including roles as a heavy equipment operator, trainer assessor and operations coordinator (which included recruiting staff), I’ve seen a lot of changes — but one challenge remains constant: the shortage of skilled heavy equipment operators. This isn’t a simple fix, but I believe it’s rooted in a few key issues: 1️⃣ Tighter Margins: Many companies are operating with limited budgets, and training is often seen as a cost rather than an investment. 2️⃣ Insufficient Training Standards: Unlike trades like plumbing or electricians, where training involves years of paid structured on the job training followed by exams to pass, heavy equipment operators can gain qualifications in as little as a day or two. This leads to gaps in real-world skill. 3️⃣ Reliance on Labor Hire: Many companies rely heavily on labor hire to source already-skilled and competent operators. While it may be a quick solution, it doesn’t address the underlying need for ongoing training and development, nor does it ensure a steady pipeline of new, well-trained talent entering the industry. With half of the workforce expected to retire over the next decade, it’s clear we need to change course. Aaron Witt is spot on — improving training and development is critical for the future of our industry. It’s time to look at operator training as the high-stakes investment it truly is, rather than a checkbox. What are your thoughts? How can we push for more meaningful, lasting change in training, standards, and workforce development? #HeavyEquipment #OperatorShortage #TrainingStandards #LaborHire #BuildingTheFuture #ConstructionIndustry

I have been noticing that a trend in the maintenance field has some issues. I am not one to say much, or "post here" as I have always been afraid of people critiquing me on my opinion(s). That being said. Companies seem to be putting all the pressures on the front line salary people. They, what I feel is, want a "salary" person to "work" "tools in hand" as an hourly technician with more skills than their subordinates rather than someone who can teach/train their people how to perform their jobs better. often in a union environment where this isn't even possible. As a supervisor, your job in my mind, is, to build and train your people/team to be as efficient, safe, knowledgeable, confident and secure in their duties as they can possibly be. It is NOT to do their jobs for them nor walk them thru every job. I could be wrong, maybe im completely wrong? I'm only posting how I feel.

Recruitment is more than filling positions – it's about building relationships that last. Lately, I’ve shifted my focus to permanent roles, and it’s made a huge difference. Being able to really understand the needs of both my clients and candidates has allowed me to make better matches, whether I’m placing a skilled Electrician or finding the right forklift operator 🚜. It’s that deep dive into understanding both sides that leads to genuine, long-term success. #permanentrecruitment #clientrelationships #jobplacement #adelaidejobs
