How's the start of 2024 going in the western Canada trades world? Insert "puppy sitting in fire saying this is fine" meme. I'm taking my analysis of the current skilled trades talent landscape in Alberta and British Columbia from 2024 year-to-date online job ads, posted across major websites. Heavy Duty Mechanics and Heavy Equipment Technicians (On and Off Road) still dominate the western landscape as the hardest trade to find staff for. I've seen the average wage expectations for these roles remain steady since Q3 2023, with fully ticketed Journeyman and Red Seals still remaining the highest paid per hour of all the trades (especially if the company requires a CVIP). Alberta dominates with 64% of the 1227 job postings, leaving British Columbia with 36%. Alberta's stronghold on the job ads is predominantly attached to mining and pipeline operations and expansions. Electricians: Despite 1,363 job postings, the regional breakdown (47% Alberta, 53% BC) obscures the intricate nature of demand. Many of the posted electrician roles cater to construction contracts, and electricians can run concurrent projects in a single quarter, complicating traditional talent metrics. Welders: The oil and gas sector in Alberta propels the demand, of the 894 job ads posted 61% came from Alberta, alongside an additional 457 pipefitter and gasfitter roles. These are mostly coming from Alberta's oil + gas sector where welder searches are now ramping up due to modification and fabrication yard work loads starting. Millwrights: 638 jobs ad's posted (43% in Alberta and 57% in British Columbia). During the same period last year there was 1,201 job ads posted. Machinists: This was the one the surprised me the most. Year to date there were 282 machinist job ads posted - this is by-far the lowest I've seen in the first 15 weeks of a year ( 595 in the first 15 weeks of 2023, and 460 in 2022). While I know we're not yet in the full swing of oil + gas season, I'm wondering if companies have finally become staffed up, with 50% of the companies no longer looking for millwrights and machinists? Or, is everything getting outsourced to contractors or overseas? As we navigate into Q2 2024, technical workforce management becomes increasingly intricate. If you're hiring a tradesperson and you're in a bit of a tight spot: reach out to me. I have ideas and tips to try that don't always start with the words "increase your wages" ... That does help though seriously Stay informed, stay agile, and harness the technical talent potential in Alberta and British Columbia's dynamic skilled trades markets. #TechnicalInsights #WorkforceManagement #TalentAcquisition #SkilledTrades #Alberta #BritishColumbia

🚀 The Evolution of Skilled Trades and Manufacturing: Then vs. Now (2024) It's incredible to see how much the landscape of skilled trades and the manufacturing industry has changed over the years, especially when it comes to wages. In the past, these fields were often seen as lesser-paying jobs compared to white-collar professions. But fast forward to 2024, and the picture looks very different. In the early 2000s, the average annual salary for a skilled tradesperson or a manufacturing worker was around $30,000-$40,000. Today, many roles in these industries offer salaries well above $60,000, with some specialized trades earning even more. For example, electricians and plumbers often earn between $50,000 to $75,000 annually and more specialized roles like elevator installers and repairers can earn up to $85,000 or more. In manufacturing, positions such as CNC machinists and industrial maintenance technicians can earn between $50,000 to $80,000, reflecting the high demand and the essential nature of these jobs. Skilled trades and manufacturing will always be in need. From electricians and plumbers to welders, CNC operators, and HVAC technicians, these professionals are the backbone of our infrastructure. However, we're facing a shortage of workers in these fields today. The younger generation is often steered towards college degrees, overlooking the lucrative and fulfilling careers available in the trades and manufacturing. If you're considering a career change or advising the next generation, don't overlook skilled trades and manufacturing. They offer a path to financial stability and a rewarding career without massive amounts of student loans. If you're interested in skilled trades or manufacturing positions, please give me a call at 716.635.0290 or send your resume to Phil@apbuffalo.com #SkilledTrades #Manufacturing #CareerOpportunities #WageGrowth #JobSecurity #VocationalTraining #FutureOfWork #NoStudentDebt #APExecutiveStaffing

Thank You to the Trades Have you ever considered the benefits the trades offer to society? The unsung hero of the American economy is the trades. From HVAC techs to mechanics, construction managers, welders, and even truck drivers, these careers offer our country a firm foundation of comfort and stability. I recall several years ago when tree roots blocked our water pipes, which connected to the city water system. It was a big job, and I was so thankful that a local plumber was able to help us. Otherwise, we could have had a sewage backup in our basement. Thankfully, we avoided that! Growing up in the 1990s, I was taught that college was a requirement for success. But what we've seen is that that is not at all true. My father never went to college but was very successful in logistics. Plumbers, electricians, and other tradespeople can earn a great living wage, especially if they become business owners. On top of that, how many college graduates do we know whose impact on society is minimal? That's not to say that college is entirely worthless. Still, at the very minimum, it does require that we acknowledge the great value that trade careers offer to both the worker and society. So take some time today to thank someone you know who works in the trades! #hvac #electrician #plumber #construction #orangecountyca #businessowner #wealthmanagement #

Skilled trades are booming, but there's a catch. Top 5 trades by hourly wage in Q3 2024: 1. Electricians: $42.61 2. Plumbers: $38.69 3. Auto Techs: $37.37 4. HVAC Techs: $36.23 5. Carpenters: $33.60 These aren't just jobs. They're careers with real growth potential. Yet, we're facing a massive shortage. My take? We need to rethink how we view trades. They're not fallback options. They're first-choice careers. How can we bridge this gap and attract more talent to these essential fields? #CareerOpportunities #WorkforceDevelopment
