Christmas is a time of giving, so what better way then for our Wise Living residents to show their appreciation to their neighbours! We gave them the opportunity to nominate a neighbour who they felt added a positive experience to their rental experience or someone who may have had a tough year and needed a pick me up! Needless to say we were overwhelmed and it was super difficult to select the lucky recipients of a Christmas Hamper but we did and their hampers are now on their way! #btr #christmasgiveaway #givingback #timeofgiving

#linkedincommunity A question for you as we start this first week in March… What are the reparations we can offer to ourselves? So much of my liberation work has hinged on the areas that I can gift myself peace, care and love devoid of permission from the systems that harmed me in the first place. How are YOU actualizing reparations for yourself today? #reparations #communitycare #liberation

Shared Lives carers help the people they support to live their most independent life in a way that's right for them. For Sam, pictured, he wanted to get out and about more and maybe even get some work experience so that he can start taking on more responsibility in the future. That's exactly what his carer, Tori, has helped him to do! 🤔 What or who helps you to live your most independent life? Tell us in the comments! ❤️ Showing your support is easy - just give this post a little like #SharedLives #Volunteering #Carer #SocialCare #MakeADifference

There's nothing quite like volunteering. Be it on a personal level, or in a professional capacity, the act of giving and helping others is more fulfilling than words can express. It's poignant to consider that lending a hand can also be a significant tool in handling grief. I was drawn to a quote from an article about the many facets of hospice volunteering. "Volunteering is truly 'chicken soup for the soul.' It warms you when you're down and makes you feel good because you've helped someone else." Isn't it incredible? In the realm of grief and bereavement, helping others becomes a way to heal ourselves. A Google study validated this saying. It found lower stress and depression levels in volunteers compared to non-volunteers. Additionally, both in-person and virtual volunteering led to a stronger sense of purpose and social connection, greatly impacting individuals' mental and physical well-being. Isn't it time for us to rethink our notion of giving? Shouldn't we consider how, in reaching out to help another, we simultaneously heal a part of ourselves? And in the hospice world, couldn't such an act also become a lifeline to those grappling with loss, offering them comfort when they need it the most? I encourage everyone reading to ponder these questions and share their own experiences or thoughts on volunteering. You never know who your words might inspire. #volunteering #hospice #grief #bereavement #mentalhealth #healing #community #socialimpact 🤝💔💡🌻

Here's a little bit of a different #SafetyTopic -- Water Safety. It's pool, lake, and beach season, and taking a swim is a great way to cool off. But water needs to be respected! This summer, take steps to make sure your loved ones -- especially kids -- are safe in and around the water. In my years with the Y, some of the key things we talked about when it comes to water safety are: 🙋♂️Make sure kids know they need to ask permission before getting in the water. Make it a habit. The child gets permission, and an adult is aware! 👀 While all adults should be paying attention, consider creating shifts with designated "Water Watchers." His or her job is to watch the summer fun like a hawk with no distractions. 📵 Put your phone down! Especially the Water Watcher. 💦 Don't just watch: Get in! Model safe behavior in and around water! 🏊♀️ And finally, the best way to keep kids safe around water is to enroll in swim lessons. The Y (YMCA) invented swim lessons, and there are Ys in communities across the country. Many (Most? All?) provide support for families to participate in programs like swim lessons, even if they are struggling financially. And if you're an adult who can't swim, The Y offers adult swim lessons as well! Will you commit to being a Water Watcher this summer? #watersafety #summertime
Today was SPLASH Day and we are so grateful to our volunteers and sponsors who helped us impact hundreds of Greenville kids today. Especially Kiwanis International who provided vouchers for YMCA swim lessons for underserved communities. For SPLASH Day, we offered free water safety lessons at Prisma Health Family YMCA, Caine Halter Family YMCA, Eastside Family YMCA, and The Sullivan Apartments. Participants learned how to save themselves and others if they or a friend becomes distressed in the water.
