PRIME Workshop: Sustainable Material Choices in Design 🌱 ♻️ Subject-matter experts from PRIME Members met recently in London to discuss sustainability in material selection when designing bespoke interiors and furniture and more generally in the construction of super-prime residential properties in the UK. We were joined by representatives from Ideaworks, Weldon Flooring, Silverlining Furniture, LA London, and Winch Design to discuss how it is they are embracing sustainability in their organisations and, in particular, about choosing ‘sustainable’ materials and putting sustainable alternatives forward for consideration. ✅ Defining Sustainability: The discussion revealed that sustainability encompasses environmental, social, and commercial factors. While UN Sustainable Development Goals provide a framework, assessing materials against these criteria remains complex and time-consuming. A key insight was the need to balance transportation impact with production sustainability—a local material may not always be the greener choice. ✅ Innovations and Alternatives: Participants showcased materials like leather made from leaves, cactus, and pineapple, alongside modular products designed for reuse. Trade shows and sample libraries were highlighted as vital resources, with a shift away from unsustainable choices like shagreen. ✅ Testing and Marketing: Testing sustainable alternatives for durability and compatibility is critical before implementation. Internally, success stories and CPD sessions help organisations share knowledge and align teams. For clients, storytelling that emphasises craftsmanship, heritage, and innovation were proven to drive engagement with sustainable options. 🖇️ Conclusion: The path to sustainability requires more than new materials—it’s about rethinking practices and priorities. From using narrower oak planks to mixing sustainable and traditional materials in cabinetry, incremental changes can lead to meaningful impacts. Embracing sustainability is a collective effort, requiring collaboration across teams, clients, and supply chains. Together, we can build designs that last for generations while respecting our planet. 🔍 If you would like to find out more about how the PRIME community could help you in your sustainability journey then visit https://weareprime.org/ or speak to one of our members. #weareprime #sustainability #sustainableinnovation #environmentalimpact #communityimpact #accountability #greenfuture #sustainablematerial #craftsmanship #bespokeinteriors #furniture #primeresidentialproperties

Sustainable design is transforming how homes are built and lived in, emphasizing eco-friendly materials and practices that benefit both homeowners and the environment. One standout trend is the use of reclaimed wood, which not only reduces the demand for new timber but also adds unique character to interiors with its natural imperfections and rich history. Recycled materials are equally impactful, with options like recycled steel, glass, and plastic being repurposed into durable, modern building materials. Energy-efficient appliances are another cornerstone of sustainable design, helping homeowners reduce energy consumption while enjoying the latest in convenience and technology. By integrating these materials and practices, sustainable design not only enhances the aesthetic and functionality of a home but also minimizes its environmental impact. Incorporating sustainable design means making a positive choice for your home, as well as the planet. #sustainabledesign #ecoarchitecture #reclaimedwood #energyefficient #greenliving
