After a relaxing holiday, returning to the grind often feels like you're back on the hamster wheel, scurrying but going nowhere. But you decide whether it has to be so. Avoid crash landing back onto the hamster wheel after the holidays. Take a little time to think about the work ahead of you. Outline tasks, rank them, and prepare a realistic action plan. Don't plunge back into work without a plan. Slow and steady wins the race. There's no need to try and do everything at once when you're back. Pace yourself. Get the important things done first, and take your time with the rest. Reinvest in your motivation, too. Remind yourself of your long-term work goals. What are you working towards? Why is it important to you? When you reflect on what you're striving for and why, you will start to reconnect your work with your purpose. You can even keep those answers on a note on your screen or inside the front cover of your notebook for the first weeks back. Can you continue the holiday spirit even as you return to work? Whether it's a few moments of mindfulness, a brisk walk during lunch, or a coffee to share travel stories with a colleague, find pockets of peace. Don’t expect to go full steam ahead from day one. Easing back into your routine helps avoid burnout. If you haven’t taken your annual leave this year, consider why that might be. P.S. I'm scratching my head over a recent survey reporting that 46% of U.S. workers don’t use all their paid time off, often because they fear falling behind, burdening colleagues, or damaging their careers. The part I really don't understand is that 52% report not needing the break! Yet, taking time off is vital for recharging and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. We need to rethink how we value rest and recuperation. Taking a break isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s essential for personal well-being and long-term productivity. #selfleadership #personaldevelopment #highperformancecoaching #worklifeintegration #wellness #mentalhealth Picture: Me in a “hamsterwheel” at Vitensenteret Sorlandet, Arendal.

While our professional commitments are important, it's equally essential to be intentional about spending quality time with family and close friends. After all, these are the relationships that make our work truly worthwhile. Finding balance during the holidays can be challenging, but it's a vital part of maintaining our well-being and happiness. Here are a few tips to help you achieve that balance: 1. Prioritize Time: Schedule time for family and friends just as you would for important meetings. Put away work distractions and focus on making memories that will last a lifetime. 3. Reflect and Recharge: Use this time to reflect on the past year, recharge your energy, and set intentions for the year ahead. This reflection can bring clarity and motivation for both personal and professional growth. Great to be back after a rejuvenating holiday! 🌟 As we dive back into the grind, let's talk about the importance of breaks. Are you the type that prefers a long break once or twice a year, or do you opt for regular mini getaways? Taking long breaks once or twice a year allows for extended relaxation and exploration, providing ample time to disconnect and recharge fully. It offers the opportunity to immerse oneself in new experiences and cultures, fostering personal growth and rejuvenation. However, the downside might be the buildup of stress and burnout before the next scheduled break, as well as the challenge of readjusting to work upon return. On the other hand, opting for regular mini getaways offers consistent opportunities to recharge and reset, maintaining a healthy work-life balance throughout the year. These shorter breaks can help prevent burnout, boost creativity, and increase overall productivity by providing frequent moments of relaxation and reflection. However, the challenge may lie in ensuring these breaks are truly restful and not just filled with more activities, as well as the logistical aspect of planning and organizing multiple short trips. As John Lubbock once said, "Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time." Taking time off allows us to recharge, gain perspective, and come back stronger. Leadership expert, John C. Maxwell, emphasizes, "The greatest day in your life and mine is when we take total responsibility for our attitudes. That's the day we truly grow up." This includes recognizing the value of breaks in sustaining productivity and creativity. Recharge to Excel: The Power of Taking Time Off In today’s fast-paced work environment, many of us feel the pressure to constantly stay "on." But here's the reality: consistent hustle without breaks can do more harm than good. Taking time off and enjoying holidays isn’t just about relaxation; it’s about recalibrating yourself to operate at peak performance. Why time off matters for your proficiency: 1. Boosted Productivity: Time away gives your mind the space it needs to refresh, resulting in sharper focus and greater efficiency when you return to work. 2. Enhanced Creativity: Stepping out of routine often sparks new ideas. Whether it's a vacation or a quiet staycation, changing your scenery can help you think outside the box. 3. Reduced Burnout: Prolonged work without breaks leads to fatigue and stress. Holidays allow you to recharge your mental and emotional batteries. 4. Improved Relationships: Time off helps you reconnect with loved ones and strengthen personal bonds, which directly impacts your overall happiness and satisfaction. Why staying consistent matters: It’s important not just to take breaks but to plan them consistently. Whether it’s short weekend getaways or longer annual holidays, regular downtime ensures you maintain a balanced rhythm. Remember, taking time off isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. When you prioritize your well-being, you’re not only doing yourself a favor—you’re also investing in the quality of your work. We all aim for work-life balance, but it can be tricky when things get busy. Here are a few tips that might help: Take Holidays: Holidays are great for resetting your thinking and refreshing your mind. Encourage your team to do the same - it's great for morale! It doesn't have to be expensive - taking off on Friday night for a long weekend away is sufficient. Aim to have a rest and reset every three months. Stay Healthy: Easier said than done, but staying healthy makes a huge difference in how you feel at work and in your personal life. It helps your mind cope with the stresses of running a business. Have a look at your diet and exercise plan. Is there a small change you can make that would make you feel better? Learn to Delegate: Many hands make light work! Delegate to the right people and let them get on with it. Your business will run more smoothly and efficiently (and you might be able to add another day off on your next trip away). Switch Off: At the end of the day and on weekends, learn to switch off properly. This can be tough when we’re all so easily contactable, but starting with turning off your emails on weekends is a good start. I've set up my phone to be on 'do not disturb' overnight to make it easier for me to disconnect. Running a small business can be rewarding but also overwhelming with early starts, long days, and often no weekends. If you're feeling the strain, we can help by ensuring you have the right systems in place to reduce paperwork and focus on your goals.
